It sounds as if it never gets to windows. At bootup the pc goes to an IC called BIOS and reaads it. Then it passes control to the Hard Drive (HD) whare Windows takes control and finishes booting up. Now I have to ask some questions. Question 1: What version of windows do you have? What is model and brand of Laptop? Is there an error message on screen? Does it make a beeping sound when powered on? I can help you with more info

When I turn on my laptop pc every couple days a black screen will come up and the laptop stops processing. Why? How to fix it?

I would suspect a glitch in the MBR/software, a black screen with a white cursor in the top left, BUT, Try this , when you shut down always unplug, remove battery when you use at home connected to AC. At boot in BIOS, BOOT sequence, change to Boot from HDD first. Also remove DVD's, CD's from the DVD/CD rom drive, if the machine has boot from DVD/CD rom as a default, it will try to read the disk in the drive first, delaying a switch to second HDD boot. This is a general idea in the Boot sequence procedure: http://helpdeskgeek.com/how-to/change-boot-order-xp-vista/

My hp g61 will only display a blank/black screen with the cursor after it has finish booting

That cursor is the way in which the BIOS of the laptop is telling you that Windows is completely corrupted and unbootable. You will need to reinstall it so use the recovery cd that came with the laptop.

When I try to boot up windows Vista I get black screen

Looks like its an infection to me.
When you get to the black screen and you are able to move the mouse, try this:
Press Ctr+Alt+Del, a message will pop up.
Select Task Manager
A Task Manager window appears.
Click on File and choose New task (run)
Type: explorer.exe
Press the enter key.
You should be able to see your desktop again.

Once there, use a combination of antivirus, spyware, troyan horses solution of your preference to get rid of it.

Black Screen on Startup.

Did you try " Last known good configuration at start up. If after boot you press the F8 key where you said you went into safe mode, did you try to load the good known config. It sounds like you have a corrupted registry.

Computer displays black screen with blinking cursor

Its seems its not booting correctly. Just Insert Windows CD and fix the windows. Another solution is to press (I think) F1 or F11 or F12 (depending on the model) when booting the machine. It will take you to recovery mode. Use it to restore the boot section ONLY.
