You need to make a bootable CD, put theToshiba DMI utility on the bootable CD; Boot from that CD, then run DMI utility to set the machine to match the designation on your recovery disks. That'll do it.

I have a Samsung VM8000 the dvd rom does not work is there another way to load an operating system on. I do have an external USB DVD drive. Is there a DOS driver I can down load to use this as I have...

What a lovelly old laptop, I still use one.
The BIOS menu will not allow booting from USB as the USB driver must be installed first and that is run within Windows.
You will need and external DVD rom plugged in through the PCMIA sockets on the left side of the laptop.
There are, from time to time, CD roms from Samsung VM8000 laptops offered for sale on eBay.
You could, of course, remove the 20Gb drive and place it in a caddy, load it as an external drive on another pc then copy the XP disk to a directory. Then replace the drive and try and boot from the rebuilt system you have just put on it.
Hope that helps.

I have a a45-s130 toshiba laptop computer....My system recovery rom won't work...I know that the rom is the correct one because it was sent by toshiba...Everytime I start the computer with it in the rom...

This happens quite a bit. The recovery CD is looking for a machine ID from your laptop and didn't find the correct one. You need to download Toshiba's DMI utility (put it on a CD and make it bootable), boot from it, then run DMI Utility and tell your machine it is an A45 series. That'll do it.

My laptop says it has an invalid ip address

If the laptop's own IP address is invalid, you need to figure out where the incorrect settings are. If you're running it with a wireless adapter and a router, make sure that the network connection is set to DHCP and not to static IP address.

Probably the best course of action, especially if you're not very experienced with networks or IP addresses, is to run the New Connection Wizard, which you can access like this:
1) click on Start
2) move the mouse pointer up to Settings
3) click on Control Panel
4) double click on Network Connections
5) click on File
6) click on New Connection
7) follow the instructions.

I hope that helps! Good luck.

I have an ibm t21...it booting to: invalid boot.ini file...booting from C:\winnt\ ntdetect failed.......................will not boot from here. can you help? i have a 'product recovery CD-Rom that came...

our user manual for the laptop should show a feature to boot from the cd or it usually on the laptop it self ( a function key ) that will let you boot from the CD.
Go here/ follow the recovery instruction / save to flash drive .
print out if needed .

here is the site instruction set:

copy/paste into URL or the address locator in browser.

Got a samsung vm8000 series how do i put it back to factory settings......it was given to me without any instructions by a teacher.....who was throwing it out

Disc recovery CD/DVD comes or sometime created by user who starts using the PC from factory boot. So, you will need to find out the System recovery disk. also there is a built in option for recover the system in original factory default if the OS is provided by the Device vendor ( such as: hp, sony, toshiba etc.) they all provides the system with pc as System Recovery disc creator.... Let us know further...

Thanks

Hard drive and DMI issue

No, the DMI issue will remain. It has to do with the recovery operating system being linked to the machine's serial number. Purchase an operating system disc and that will take care of it. The only catch is that you will need to install some drivers for your machine after the install. All the drivers can be found at Toshiba's support site. Keep in mind that the hard drive not booting may be a hard drive failure in which the drive may need replaced, but just a new hard drive will not solve the DMI issue.
