From the HP website:
ISSUE: The printer displays an assert error code. Assert error codes indicate that the printer has an internal condition that may respond to a hard reset of the printer. Beyond that, service may be required. This document applies to the following products:

There is a manual paper release on the bottom of the paper tray. If it gets stuck the paper does not rise to be picked up. Not sure why it registers an amber paper jam for it, but I taped my release open and put the tray back in carefully. Its been working for 2 days straight now.
My real issue was I had both the low toner and paper jam lights on solid and amber. I waited a few days to post this to make sure it worked. Worth a shot for you all. post back if it works for you .

Thanks for being there, guys. I was freaking out because I wanted to print my boarding pass to fly to San Francisco for a family dinner.
A friend came over, unplugged the printer, replugged it and MAGIC! It worked. I'll remember that next time altho' I don't know why that happened.
Thanks a bunch.

As far as I remember, HP has the actual print nozzles built into the cartridge itself. Part of the reason their cartridges are so expensive. The trick that I use is fold a paper towel into quarters (fold in half. then fold in half the long way, again). This should now be about 1/4 the original size. You want it 4 layers thick so that the ink doesn't soak through and stain your counter top or whatever. Moisten the folded paper towel with warm water (doesn't need to be hot) and hold the print head part of the cartridge against the wet, warm towel. This will soften the ink and allow it to flow again. Check to make sure that there are ink marks on the towel where you had the head area placed. Dab the head on a dry part of the towel and replace it back into the printer and run the head cleaning utility. This has always solved my HP cartridge ink flow problems, uses less ink than the cleaning utility and keeps the heads from getting messy by not running the cleaning utility 4-5 times in a row.
