Question about Sony KP-51HW40 51" Rear Projection Television
My Sony kp-53HS10 , picture comes on for 3-5 seconds then goes off, sound stays on , could you help me with this issue, Thank
I had the same problem. My TV had been fading for months. When I first turned it on, it would be fuzzy and out of focus, plus the colours would be off, but after it warmed up it looked fine.
Then the other day it started turning off after a few minutes and the standby light would blink 5 times over and over.
I tried following the instruction given in the previous answer, with the following differences;
The front speaker cover did not have any screws at the bottom corners, instead it just popped out.
I just pulled at the sides gently untill it came away.
Next, I had to remove the 4 screw holding the control panel in the center, then pull the control panel out as far as it would come.
Next remove the 4 screws from the 1' x 2' wood cover that was behind the control panel.
This will expose the insides and you can see the 3 tubes and the panel on the right that contains the 6 adjustment pots. The pots were not labled, but I took a guess and got it right.
The ones to adjust are the top 3 (the bottom 3 must be focus)
It took me a while to get it right. be careful not to turn them too far clockwise as when I did it started crackling and I though I had fried something, but I guess I was ok.
I was having trouble getting the right balance, so I turned them all anticlockwise first, then turned each one clockwise till I saw color and then backed them off untill I got a black screen and could see the channel display.
When I finish adjusting them all, I turned the TV off for a few minutes, then back on and left it on for 15 minutes. the blinking did not come back.
I then plugged it back into my satalite reciever and got an awesom picture. Much better then before.
Now when I turn on the TV it has a great picture right away. I'm hoping it will stay this way.
My wife was dissapointed, she was hoping it was toast so we could get a plasma :)
I guess you can't please everyone.
thanks for the help and good luck if you are trying this.
WARNING, there are very high voltages inside the TV, be very carefull not to touch anything.
I used a long insultated screwdriver to adjust the pots.

Pull off the front speaker grill after removing 2 screws on the bottom corners. The grill will come out from the bottom before it can come down, then it is off. Undo the wires ties by hand to get 1 foot slack in the cables. Remove the 4 screws on the 1' by 2' hardboard cover to get into the bottom of the TV. Find the 6 adjustment pots (2 rows of 3 pots) One row is the "focus", do not touch these. The other row sais "screens". These you need to adjust. Turn on the tv. Use the tv/video button to switch to a black screen. You need to go up and down to get "cut off" to black for each gun/crt. Turn each screen controal clockwise untill you see color, then counterclockwise slowly and stop when that color goes black. Do this for all 3 screens = all 3 guns/crts =red, green, blue. If this Sony adjustment does not fix it, than you may need a new gun/crt which is expencive.
