Question about Sony ICF-SW7600 AM/FM/SW Radio

Open Question

For KB8DNS Sony ICF-SW7600. Freq selection and scan work, but it doesn't appear to be receiving stations. Get static, buzzes, etc., but don't appear to be coming from anything external. I bought it for my boat years ago and had a little adapter that allowed me to copy weather fax and rtty news. I am getting ready to take my tech and general exams this coming week. I got it out of storage to do some listening. Any chance you're still helping repair these radios? If so, please contact me at normcherry@embarqmail.com Regards, Norm

SOURCE: 13 years old Sony ICF-SW7600 not working

Sony radios of this era had notorious capacitor problems.... also several other brands were affected. These capacitors were underrated and the technology to make them was not at it's best back then. The cure is to replace the capacitors on the board with new electrolytics. About 28 of them need to be replaced but the big problem is to find someone to do this. the original capacitors are surface mount and must be removed and new radial lead caps put in their place, some are rather tough to get at and the new ones have to be placed carefully. My SONY ICF-SW7600 now works as new and maybe even better!
I have done this myself as I have skills working with surface mount capacitors. I offer my services to those who cannot find service for their radios. Please email me for details, I am not into making bucks on this, I just want to see these radios kept working and bringing enjoyment to their owners.

SOURCE: Advantage of (1980s and 1990s) Sony ICF-SW7600

Some newer radios do not have the quality build that the old ones had. The switch over to cheaper labor countries have lessened the quality and lack of good parts have lead to newer designs but not always better. My old SONY ICF-7600, not the G or GR, has a great receiver on LW and MW but after replacing aging capacitors!

These radios are subject to bad electrolytic capacitors. Need to replace them. Not an easy job but can be done for about 25 dollars plus shipping. Rod ( poikaa@yahoo.com )

My ICF-SW7600 has a clipping sound when first

It's hard to describe a sound in words, so I'm not sure I know what your "clipping sound" sounds like. You may be describing what's called "motorboating", which is a loud rapid putt-putting that drowns out the desired sound until it fades away. This is usually due to power supply problems, most often caused by bad filter capacitors. If I remember this model correctly, it doesn't have a built-in supply so you need to run it with an external adapter. That may be the source of your trouble. Try a different adapter or use battery power to see if the problem goes away.

If this problem only shows up when you're tuned to the station on 93.9, your radio may be picking up some kind of interference. It's also possible (but very unlikely) that the radio itself is producing a "birdie", which is a false signal on some frequency. If this is the case, it's a very obscure problem that may be very hard to find.

Sorry I can't be more precise, but maybe this will get you started. Thanks for using Fixya!
