You can open manually using small metal stick (metal paper clip).
Turn off PC, poke small hole (under the tray) gently. Check the rubber ring (like fan belt that goes to electrical motor), it might too loose.

I have a problem w/ my Lite On SHW-160P6S DVD RW Dual Layer Burner which won't read any DVD or CD. Also, The door to the unit won't open unless you insert a pin in the little hole on the front of the unit...

You will have to open the unit. To be honest, it's a good idea to buy a new one as I had to change to belt and my drive started smoking when I turned my computer on.

What is the comparable drive for lite-on dvdrw drive SHW-160P6S?

IMHO this Lite-On model,

http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/searchtools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=4893211&csid=_21

Except it is faster, will read, and burn dual layer disks, and also has LightScribe Technology.

(LightScribe Technology is from HP. You have to use HP disks, (CD or DVD) that are made for LightScribe Technology)

This is the specifications of the Lite-On SHW-160P6S for you to compare against,

http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=1740403&CatId=482

This is information about HP's LightScribe Technology,

Says I dont have a dvd burner and I have this one installed.. lite-on DVDRW SHW-160P6S..I can't burn a cd...any help? Sorry for the dumb question you guys!

do it only if u r a professional..

open it up, with the lens assembly there is a small preset, turn it using a screw driver a little anti-clockwise..clean the lens with clean cotton using isopropyl alcohol..
if not done, replace the lens assembly..
or else, replace the drive with a standby n see..

i gotta know: is ur drive pata/sata and the device make n model..
assuming that ur drive is pata, n u r a professional n aware of bios/cmos setup utility handling..!!
open up ur system cabinet and see if all the data cables n jumper settings at the back of the drives (master/slave selection)..itz most important..!!
however, at the bootup (0.29sec) start pressing briskly the key to enter cmos utility or bios setup (eg. F1/F2/F10/Del as applicable)..glance in the standard settings if r detected individually..change the 'Mode' if m/b is hybrid type(both SATA+PATA) : Native/Compatible/Enhanced (as applicable)..
see if ur device needs any additional driver or not, if so try downloading..
also try checking itz data cable for loose or faulty..
above all explanation is applicable only if itz not being detected by the m/b or system..(not for reading or writing problem)..

contact ur system admin/vendor....

Light_On dvdrw SHW-160p6s working properly but doesn't read anyth

Hi,

Thanks for coming to FixYa, The problem you have is either a well documented software problem or a failing drive.

Click the below link, then scroll down and click the "Fix It" button. Follow the onscreen instructions, restart when it's done and see if your drive re-appears. If it does, you're done, if it doesn't work then your drive is most likely failed and you should replace it.

Hope this helps FixYa,

Lite-On SHW-160P6S not recognized as ''LightScribe'' capable.

To the best of my knowledge (and I'll admit I have two LightScribe drives in my systems but have never yet used that capability), Windows has nothing to do at all with LightScribe. That is a feature of the drive itself and requires additional software to do the special burning. As far as Windows is concerned, the drive is merely a standard IDE or SATA device, and can be used as any other non-LS version. I know the drives I bought (Sonys that came from tigerdirect.com) came with CD's that I assume have the needed software on them, but I haven't bothered with them. (I have a big pile of regular printer labels to use up first.)

A Google search for "lightscribe programs) turned up lots of links, so there should be plenty of free or cheap programs to check out. That should get you scribing.

Hope this helps!

Won't read any disc

Could be dirty lens. I'd almost bet bad run of CD-r's though. Does the drive recognize finished cd's? If so it the CDr's.
