BackupExec 9.1 for Windows

By M0nica L - usenet poster

Hi there, has anyone had any success with BackupExec 9.1 for Windows as
a Media & The Remote Agent for NetWare that is supplied with the
NetWare version of BE 9.1 rather than the Windows version.

When I try to use the version supplied with BE9.1 for NW, I do get
backups but I get lots of 'Unable to initialize Remote Agent' errors in
the backup log. So many that it marks the backup as failed.

Cheers, Andy.

I don't know if you have resolved your problem or not, but we are running the same type of backup system.  BE9.1 Windows Media Server with Windows remote agents on windows servers for SQL, and the 9.1 remote agent for NetWare (installed from be 9.1 windows cd) on 2 NW 6.5 SP2 boxes.  I found a knowledge base doc on veritas that said you have to enable IPX and give the server an IPX hex name  like ABCD4321 (autoexec.ncf -- SERVERID).  You do not have to bind IPX to any adapters, just simply enable it in inetcfg.  Check out the veritas support site for the specifics.  If you can't find it email me and I'll dig it up.

It has to do with the TSAFS that is now being used since NW 6.0 SP4 and is
also used on NW 6.5. You will not be able to back up a Netware server from a
Windows server using this TSA. TSAFS will only properly work with BE 9.1 for
Netware with some tweaking because of memory leak problems. Hence if you can
get your NW 6.5 server to run TSA600 instead of TSAFS it probably have a
better chance of working. This is right from Veritas's suggestions.
Good Luck!

I am having exactly the same issue with BE9.1 and NetWare6.5 sp2, using BE
9.1 for Windows and then using the remote netware agent (the one from the
BE 9.1 for Windows CD.)

I have read elsewhere that the configuration of the servers have a large
effect on this, is this true?

If this cannot be resolved we are considering moving to HP's Dataprotector
but this wll still sit on a Windows media server.

Yes I am aware of this, when I meant in my post is 'BackupExec 9.1 for
Windows as a Media SERVER'

Our organisation is licenced for both BE Windows & BE NetWare, and we
have been using both products with the Remote Agent for NetWare
-however we are wanting to use Windows Media Servers rather than
NetWare Media Servers as BE 9.1 for NetWare does not have agents for
databases like MS-SQL etc... on Windows.

Backup Exec for NetWare is a package. It does not allow you to use
Windows as a media server. It does allow you to backup a Windows server
or work station to a NetWare media server.
I do believe that the Windows version has an option to backup a NetWare
server, but I have not looked at it.
I currently have one NetWare media server backing up eight other
NetWare servers (some w/ GroupWise) and nine Windows XP W/S's... Almost
all of them go over the wire.
I hope that it answers your question....
