Hi,

It sounds like you have a hot surface ignition system (glow bar). If this is correct and you have gas coming to the top burners then the most likely suspect is the ignitor (glow bar).

I know this sounds strange, since it is glowing, but they get week and build up a high resistance as they age and do not allow enough current to flow to open the gas valve.

If you send me your model number I can look up the part number you need, the model number is on the tag usually on the cabinet front behind the lower drawer/door.

I have a 2003 gas oven, model #JGBP28BEK3WH. All the top burners kick on but the oven doesn't. I can set the oven to preheat but so far it never lights. Please help.

You probably have a bad ignitor in your oven. The gas will not turn on until the ignitor glows red hot - less resistance and more current for valve to open. This can be replace by a repairman or a tool savvy homeowner. If you call a repair man, your looking at 150.00 to 200.00. Part can be from 50.00 to 110.00. I usually charge 110.00 plus the price of the ignitor.

I have a kenmore self cleaning gas oven. the pilots light, the broil kicks on, but preheat won't start. what can i do?

Ok well heres the deal. I'm assuming that because this is a self cleaning oven then its probably fairly new in which case you probably don't have actual pilot lights on there but "glowbars" which are called ignitors. If this is the case, and you can see your ignitors for the bake and broil both glowing then chances are you have a weak bake ignitor. If the ignitor is not getting hot enough, then it will not send enough current to the gas valve to energize it (allowing it to open and let gas in). If its not glowing at all you can just get a voltage detector (you can buy them at walmart for about 10 bucks) turn the oven on and use your wand to see if the ignitor is getting power. If it is then its going to actually be open or shorted.

Overall deal is that 95/100 times if you have a gas oven with ignitors and its not baking its and bad or weak ignitor. They cost about 60-90 bucks.

If your oven does indeed have a pilot light then you will have a bad thermocouple or possibly obstructed burner tube.

Hope this helps _MJ_

Kitchenaid gas oven very slow to start - can be 5 - 10 minutes before I hear it kick on. For a while I could get it to start by turning on a gas burner, but that is 100% effective. Any suggestions? Also...

Replace your ignitor, this is a very common problem. As the ignitor gets older, it gets weaker. When it gets weaker, it usually starts out by not giving good temps in the oven, then it starts to take longer and longer before it lights the oven burner, then it stops lighting the burner completely. A good ignitor heats up fast, allows the current to flow through to the gas valve, opens the gas valve and lights the oven burner within 30 to 50 seconds. When you order your ignitor ask if their is a cheaper generic ignitor for this model. Their can be a huge price difference in some units. You can also have a bad sensor, control board, gas valve, or wiring problem, however for the last 15 or so years every job I have done with your problem has been an ignitor. I would start by replacing the ignitor. It could glow enough to light the oven, but to maintain the burner, it often re-ignites several times during a cooking cycle. I have had the problem before, replaced the ignitor and all was well. You should be able to find an ignitor for under $40 online. Just google 'Maytag oven ignitor' and you should find many offers. My sister just bought one for $19.99!

When the oven safety valve refuses to open and let gas through, it's almost always because not enough current is flowing through the ignitor. Often an aging ignitor will appear to be glowing pretty brightly but still won't draw enough current to make the valve open. The first thing to try replacing is the ignitor.

You describe your ignitor as "red and glowing" but oven ignitors normally get a lot brighter than "red" -- well into what I'd call yellow.

Top oven bake igniter comes on, but gas does not.

Check the voltage on the 2 wires going to the oven gas valve. If you get 120v when the ignitor is on with no gas coming out, you have a bad gas valve. If you get voltage, but it is not much, it is the ignitor. The ignitors don't burn out completely on the ovens, they just get a little dim and no longer ignite the gas and eventually will not turn on the gas valve
