If you have enough room for the converter and power adapter you should be fine. Note that the speed of the drive will be reduced to that of the IDE converter which will be slower than a direct SATA interface.

Good Luck

That model has standard IDE interface for hard drive. Don't think 500 GB or higher comes with that interface. The standard now is SATA interface for hard drives. Here is a lnk to the owner's manual for you model:
ftp://ftp.dell.com/Manuals/all-products/esuprt_desktop/esuprt_optiplex_desktop/optiplex-gx60_user%27s%20guide_en-us.pdf
You tell the difference between standard IDE and SATA in that the standard IDE interface uses a wide flat ribbon cable to connect to the drive. SATA uses a small thin cable as shon in the following link:

My dell optiplex GX260 computer cannot see the ATA hard drive

Make sure that the drive is connected in the primary IDE connector. Also put the jumper at the back of your drive to "master".

Hi there! You don't actually need a IDE to SATA converter. If you purchase a RAID 1 card, it gets hooked up to your computer via PCI or PCI-E. The RAID card will have at least two SATA ports on it - those are what you use to create your RAID. The sata port and ide port on the computer will not be used in the raid1 configuration. If you're going to go ahead with this, I'd recommend trying to find the exact same brand and model of drive as the first one you have. Also, keep in mind that creating a RAID 1 array requires formatting BOTH drives. Your Optiplex 170 only has PCI ports, so this may be a viable RAID card. It is fairly inexpensive, but will do the job. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16816132001&cm_re=PCI_RAID-_-16-132-001-_-Product If you need any more help/advice let me know! Windows 2000 cannot access USB drives for installation.
You need to replace the dead drive with a new IDE or PATA drive. That machine will not accept an SATA drive.

Can Vantec CB-IS100 IDE to SATA converter works to convert Motherboard ide port to sata or it made only for hard drives,cd-roms and DVD rom ?

It attaches directly to the drive, whether it be IDE hard disk or CD/DVD, and is used in boxes that already have sata connectors on the MB. Connector attaches to drive, cable from connector attached to drive to sata connection on MB.

Note: Sometimes these may not work (for a variety of different reasons).

Here is a link to one seller of the converter, read through the reviews. While it works well for most, sometimes there are issues.

First test your PSU or replace it then test all leads that are attached to your hard drive sounds like a faulty lead of some sorts then
try replacing all the leads that attach to your hard drive including electrical extensions + IDE,SATA and the ones that attach from your motherboard to hard drive or
replace them they are probably old and faulty ?
good luck

HP Pavilion 7955 main HD failed; my data is on second drive (Maxtor ATA/EIDE) - still good. I want to install this as a second drive in Dell Optiplex 620 which has SATA main drive. The only IDE cables are...

Most IDE cables have THREE connectors:
* one to the motherboard
* one to the "primary" device (CD/DVD or disk-drive)
* one to the "secondary" device (disk-drive or CD/DVD)

If your IDE cable only has TWO connectors, buy a cable with THREE connectors, and connect your disk-drive to the third connector.
