Hi Good day!!! Try to boot in safe mode, to boot from safe mode, do this: while booting just keep pressing f8 button until advanced boot menu appear after that choose safemode. after that your OS will boot in safemode. if not booting there should be a files missing in your OS you will need to repair it using a CD of you OS. reply to me to help you more
If you replace the HDD, there is no reason why system hung up. try cleaning your memory cause on that case i can pinpoint that memory something wrong. try cleaning memory fixed it again, if your don't mind maybe you need to replace the memory.
if the same happen, try examine CD Disc or your cd rom drive cannot read the files on the disc.
(Option solution)Examine your motherboard after clear prove that the above solution is not working. i can assure u that main board is good. if ever it was damage that causes overheating.
Sounds like you have diagnosed your own problem to me. Its not the video card or you wouldn't be able to use the monitor, so it has to be a bad switch. If you can remove the bezel covering the switch you my be able to spray some contact cleaner into the switch and get it working again. Removal of most bezels starts with removing the screws on the back side of the lid hinges and lifting the bezell until it un-snaps from the housing.
Good luck. let us know how you make out.
