Hi, the main reason is the engine takes a lot of torque to crank it over therefore the starter solenoid is handling a lot of current(amps ) for the starter motor .
this is a link for a repair kit , i have fitted few and there very easy and straightforward to do .
hope this helps .

Pull the starter, take it apart, give everything a good cleaning, sounds like either the solenoid is hanging or there is a broken return spring

Starter on 1982 Harley Dividson FXR keeps running

Sounds like your starter solenoid is sticking closed. Remove the positive battery post, and remove the solenoid. Most likely, the copper contacts inside are worn out.

Looking for a location

All Harleys built after 1989 had Nippondenso starters on them. The "solenoid" is actually part of the starter. It's the top part of the starter that is shaped kind of like a pentagon, five sided. The large battery cable connects here and then another cable comes out the other side of it going to the starter motor. Please post the specific problem you're having and maybe someone can help.

Harley davidson won't start

Test for power to the solenoid when you push the starter button. This should help to eliminate the switch, relay, wiring etc. You can also run a jumper wire from the large (power) cable on the top of the starter to the green wire on the white connector on the end of the starter.
