PS3 to XBR1 HDMI (by 2 users)

posted by feircnom on Mar 23, 2008

For ten (10) weeks, my PS3 and bravia XBR1 played nicely together. Connected via an HDMI switcher, I got exquisite video using my PS3 and a DirecTv HD-DVR. Suddenly, no HD video from the Sony XBR. I tried different HDMI cables -- no difference. Sent back the PS3 (less than 3 months old) and, after 3 weeks I received a NEW PS3. Connected it and got the SAME PROBLEM. Called Sony about wondering if it could be the HDMI port on the XBR, but they insist that if the HD-DVR works on HDMI, it's not the TV. Now, SONY is sending me ANOTHER NEW PS3. On a whim while I'm waiting for the return box, I connected it to the HDMI port on my 22" Gateway monitor -- 180p of gorgeous video. Service tech coming tomorrow to check out the TV. any suggestions ?

Yes, using the NTSC yellow-red-white cable (it looks like h*ll).

The thing that I don't get is that it all worked (PS3 games AND Blu-Ray discs) for TEN WEEKS. All of a sudden, no video (when I turn on the PS3, the screen flashes like it does with the HDMI signal from my HD-DVR).

If it never worked, I'd assume that the XBR1 didn't support the PS3, BUT IT WORKED BEAUTIFULLY FOR TEN (10) WEEKS ...

"some video modes may not be supported" ?? Did you miss the part where I explained that it worked fine/great for TEN WEEKS?? And, that included all of the Blu-Ray disks that I tried (maybe a dozen or more) ...

So, if Blue-Ray "can only output at 1080p AND the KDL-V40XBR1 won't accept 1080p, HOW DID IT WORK SO PERFECTLY FOR TEN WEEKS ??

The PS3 worked fine with the Sony KDL-V40XBR1 for more than 10 weeks, then suddenly no video (yes, both games and Blu-Ray DVDs work beautifully). Sony replaced the PS3, but this one has the same problem -- tuned to Video 6 (manual says that's the ONLY port for HDMI), the screen flashes as if it were going to get the video, and then just stays black. The new PS3 works fine with the HDMI on my 22" lcd computer monitor ...

It was one of the first things that I eliminated (but, let's not forget that using the HDMI switcher, the PS3 [Blu-ray and HD games] worked GREAT for TEN WEEKS).

Subsequent attempts have used one of three better HDMI cables (each of the 3 had worked earlier) connecting the PS3 DIRECTLY to the XBR ...

Just was informed that BestBuy meant March 31st when they told me last Thursday that they'd have a service rep here "next Monday" ....

By station, I'm assuming you mean the PS3, and I don't think so. It sure didn't freeze when I got video on my HD computer monitor and, after the XBR flashes (but never get the video), the PS3 screen says it'll return after 30 seconds and it does -- still working just fine (of course, I'm viewing it on the low-res yellow-red-white connection) ...

Thanks for the vote of confidence (you were right, it was one of the first thing I tried AND have not used the switcher in the interceding 4 weeks ...).

Now, I just received another box to mail back the second (i.e., replacement) PS3 so I they can send me a THIRD one.

Not sure if I should keep this (it works with me computer monitor, so I know it "sorta" works) OR send #2 back and hope #3 solves the problem. [It takes 5 business days for the return and then another 4-5 days to get the next PS3 ...]

appreciate your following up ... I waited 'til after noon before calling BestBuy -- "oh, the person you talked meant March 31st when she said 'next Monday' " UPS just dropped off the box to return PS3 #2. (I hate to waste the week-and-a-half for the second replacement, that would be PS3 #3, only to find that it, too, works and it's a problem with my 2-year old Sony XBR1 ...)

Well, it's been over 4 weeks, but I don't think there's anything that needs to be reconfigured to "what was" . (I'm going to look again to see if I can make the PS3 send out a 720p video signal).

Don't know if you see all my responses, but BestBuy was supposed to have a TV repair person here today, but, on Thursday (3/20) the contact told me next Monday AND I assumed that was today. In fact, someone will be here NEXT Monday (3/31). Adding insult to injury, I just received a box/shipping-label to return this PS3 for another one. Now, the finger-pointing has begun ---
SONY HD TECHIE SONY PS3 TECHIE
If any HDMI source If the PSe works on any
works with the XBR, HD-screen (e.g., my
then the PS3 is at computer LCD using an
fault !! HDMI connection), then
the TV is at fault !!

What fun ...

I just know it worked for 10 weeks. I've agreed to wait 'til next Monday in the hope that the BB repair-person doesn't throw up his/her hands and proclaim "get another PS3 -- this one's not working !! "

Hate it when "they" just remove all the spaces!

Hope you got the jest that Sony TV and Sony PS3 actually agree -- it's the other person's product ...

I too have a Sony 46" TV with one HDMI input.  My ps3 went thru and HDMI switcher, which also attached my Directv box.  Worked for months just fine. Then no PS3 HDMI, directv is fine.  I bypassed the switcher, swapped cables and reset all video settings and also went thru the settings on the tv.  My screen flashes when the ps3 is turned on but then goes blank.  I can go thru the standard low def input, just no HDMI.   Sooooo, I was very interested in the outcome of this issue.   I don't want to send in my ps3 just to find out it wasn't the problem.    What was the resolution here?

Depending on the type of TV or content to be played, some video modes may not be supported. If a device that is not compatible with the HDCP (High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection) standard is connected to the system using an HDMI cable, video and/or audio cannot be output from the system. Copyright-protected Blu-ray video discs can only be output at 1080p using an HDMI cable connected to a device that is compatible with the HDCP (High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection) standard.

The video output setting on the system will display as "Standard (NTSC)".

Please explain whether you are still using the "HDMI Switcher" or not. If yes, then that may be the culprit, however, as thorough as you have been, I assume that you have already thought of that.

Comment by bbtoast, posted on Mar 24, 2008

Ouch, it is looking more and more like the TV, however, even that does not make complete sense. The only way to verify would be with another TV like it.

Are you 100% sure that all menu settings on your TV, and the PS3 are exactly the same as when you were good? That is the next item to check, but once again, it sounds like you have it covered.

Comment by bbtoast, posted on Mar 24, 2008

Yes I get it, really doesn't make a lot of sense, please keep me informed, and I will try to think up some other scenarios that might be the cause. Best of Luck!
