Question about Pentair Minimax NT Heater

4 Answers

My minimax NT 400 heater will not ignite. The fan turns on. The start sequence proceeds as it should. Gas flow starts (I can smell it), but there is no ignition. The sequence repeats 3 times, and then the heater goes into lockout. Error code E4 comes up on the display, indicating fan failure, but the fan is blowing. The air vacuum switch appears to work (vacuum hose not leaking, crimped, etc), and the switch registers + Ohms when vacuum is applied. Is it a bad ignitor? Other ideas?

If none of the above don't work, put a brick on top of the vent, covering only about 1" of the vent, then try firing it up. if it works, then you aren't getting enough oxygen at the ignitor.

Many things can cause this, including the ignitor as you mentioned. You can ohm out the ignitor, and that should tell you if the ignitor is capable of heating up. But this ignitor also has a built in flame sensor in it. That part of it can also be bad. If the heater has worked before, then i would probably say it is not the gas pressure. More likely clogged orifice or bad ignitor. You will not be able to check the pressures at the gas valve without a manometer.

You may have low gas flow. This is tough to check but if you have a manometer you can check gas pre on the back side of the gas valve with heater off and then while it is trying to start. If you don't have a large enough meter or gas line this will often be the problem and give you the gas smell since it will feed gas but not enough to light.Good luck.

YOU CAN PULL THE BURNER ORFICES WITHOUT PULLING THE BURNER TRAY. FLEX UP THE SHEET METAL TRAY AND PULL THE ORFICES AND CLEAN WITH #12 SOLID WIRE. SPIDER WEBS ARE BLOCKING ONE OR MORE ORFICES. IF ITS A MIDDLE ONE OVER THE HOT SURFACE IGNITER IS PLUGGED THIS IS A TYPICAL SYMPTOM. GOOD LUCK.

Ignition is locked out unit will not fire

Turn it off at the black toggle switch inside the front panel or turn it off at the breaker for 2-3 minutes
Then try again.
Check that flow is good, gas is on ect...
Is it saying lockout on the display?
If not then as you fire it up after cutting power keep the panel off and watch the ignition control red diagnostic light.
The blinking sequence of that light should point you in the right direction. There is typically a label that will tell you what the blinks mean.
Minimax nt heaters are on borrowed time, and in most my Delong with them once they start having an issue it will never end , basically they are lemons and replacements for them is very common

Fan runs, no ignition, no gas smell. E04 on LED. The fan is running louder than normal, but the heater was working up until today.

Code E04 is a fan issue. It might be the fan, a tube or the pressure switch. I hope this helps.

E04 comes on after fan purge cycle-Pentair minimax nt pool heater

This is a fan falure code. It can mean the fan has problems (not likley if the fan goes and isn't labored) You have a sensor in your exaust (probally not this if you don't get a good start) The culperet is probally in the negetive pressure sensor. This is a 2-3 inch disc with wires going to the controls and a rubber tube going to the fan. Pull the tube from the fan and make sure the fan fitting is clear (poke with a tooth pic) Be sure their are no kinks in the hose. If the heater is 4 years old the diaprahm could be bad in the pressure sensor. Check the other things first but this is probally your problem. Good luck, hope this helped.

Minimax NT 400 TSI Heater problem

I bet that your 15 seconds of flame are more like 7 seconds. The time is very important. If the flame is not recognized after a specific time the valve is shut off. If the flame sensor is GOING bad but still make some rectification then you may get the issue you are having. I would start with the flame sensor and work from there.

Pentair Minimax NT 400 heater. fan keeps coming

Sounds like the controller is the problem. This is the circuit board that has the display and controls on it. You can swing that panel open and try tapping on the white plastic cover the controller is under that. This might get the fan relay to release but you will have to replace the controller it will stick again

Heater starts and then stops.

I will keep you posted. I have aquired all the service manuals and I am in the process of taking the heater apart. It is not the motherboard.
