I apologise for not giving you enough detail in my query. I am referring to an Arcsoft ZIPP Smart Digital Image Copier. I am using Windows Vista Home Basic on a Compaq Presario SR5520AN desktop PC.

The manual states that this scanner is supported by MicrosoftUVC and Plug and Play technology and does not need a separate driver. On downloading the software I get a window to download a driver and when I do this I get a message that there was an error downloading the driver. However if I click on the Arcsoft icon in the taskbar I get a message that the driver is OK. I have plugged in the scanner to a USB.2 port and the blue leds in the scanner come on but I get a message that the scanner is not connected.

Re your latest comment, I have installed the software for the third time and it calls for a driver download which I do and get a message that driver is downloaded and OK.When I plug the digital image scanner into any usb port I get the same answer that scanner is not connected but the blue leds are on indicating that it is connected.

Click on start button go to settings and printers and faxes. If your printer is available here then your driver is installed if not then you will have to install it. You said scanner. Click Start settings control panel and dbl click scanners. If you see your scanner its ok if not you require drivers. If you are getting problems in installing the driver then kindly do let me know the error it is generating. If you are unable to download the driver then kindly let me know the link from where you are downloading.

Ok, change to a different usb port and if it detects new hardware, allow it to install and test. otherwise, post back

was it working earlier? If yes, we could use the system restore utility. follow this guide.

  • Muzahura Frank Apr 27, 2010

You need to uninstall all drivers installed first and redo the process. use the system restore guide i gave you above and choose a date just before you connected that printer to pc. after that, do not connect the printer, run the driver utility first and only connect the printer when prompted. if not prompted, connect the printer and wait for the OS to detect new hardware after which it will install the driver automatically.

    regards

More information such as operating system (windows XP, Vista or Mac) can be helpful in troubleshooting. Also the brand and model information of your multi-function printer.

If you are using Windows, click "start" - "printers and faxes" new window will open, find your printer/copier, cee if the printer is set to "online". If not, right click on the printer icon and click on "set printer online".

Let me know if this works or not so I can post another possible solution.

If you have several USB devices connected to your computer, unplug them all (except keyboard/mouse) then try your scanner on different ports to see if your problem is due to broken or low powered USB port. If that doesn't work, use a different USB cable. Let me know the result. Thanks.

Is it the first time you are going to use the scanner? Or was it working (on same computer) before and just quit recently?

HP LaserJet 2430 Printer Will Not Print since USB Power Surge Error

INSUFFICIENT POWER - USB PORT
If you get an error message "Insufficient power to operate USB device" when you plug a USB device into the computer's USB port or the un-powered USB hub that is attached to the computer's USB port, then this device is drawing excessive current that the USB port cannot supply. The maximum output from an USB port is 500mA. In case such as this, you need to purchased a powered USB hub and connect this hub into the computer's USB port and then connect the USB device into this powered USB hub.

Software is unable to find Olympus Digital camera connected to USB port

Try NOT connecting your camera to your computer.

The best way to download pictures from your camera to your computer involves removing the memory card from the camera and plugging it into a card reader (either built-in to the computer or connected via USB or FireWire). This is likely to be faster than connecting the camera to the computer, and won't run down your camera's batteries.

Once the card is plugged in, it will appear to your computer as a removable drive. You can use the operating system's drag&drop facility to copy pictures from the card to the computer's hard drive, the same way you copy any other files. Or you can use any photo cataloging program such as Picasa.

How to connect to a pc

Install the software first, then connect the usb and power cables, then turn on the unit.
Here is a section of the installation manual :

Software Installation
1. Do not connect this device to computer yet.
2. Insert the utility CD into computer's optical drive, and then the installation window should
automatically appear on the screen. If the installation window doesn't show up, go to "My
Computer" and browse the CD. By executing the "index.html" file, the installation window
will appear.
3. Click on "Private Folder Manager"/ "Playlist Manager", and then follow the on screen
instructions for installation.
4. After the software had been successfully installed, see [Connecting to USB] for cable
connection.
Connecting to USB
1. Connect the plug of AC adapter to the connector marked "DC IN", plug the other end into
an electric outlet.
2. Connect the USB cable to the USB connector. Then connect the other plug to computer's
USB port.
3. Press the Power switch and then the blue LED will light up.
4. The computer will detect this device and you can start accessing the drive.

You are using the correct connection, the external power supply is powering the drive, so the USB cable is just handling data. I believe the message may be telling you that you will get faster performance using a USB 2.0 connection, it is probably sensing that your computer's USB port is USB 1.1.

Not sure I understand this hub either. Looks like only one port is a USB 2.0 port, but here is a snippet from the manual......

This iConcepts USB Hub provides the electronic interface between USB devices and the host, It allows up to five USB devices or Hubs to connect an upstream USB Hub or Host port.

Features
• One USB 2.0 port
• 4 Port USB 1.1 and support high speed (480 mbps) and 4 port full speed (12 mbps) operations.
• The USB 2.0 port can operate both USB 2.0 & 1.1 Devices
• USB 2.0 port supports self powered mode and bus - powered mode, indicated by a powered LED .

I plug in my mouse to my laptop and it wont work, the bottem doesnt even turn red.. when i connect it all it says is usb device not recognized, it worked last night and tonight its not.

Try disconnecting the mouse from the usb port and reboot the unit.
Now, on your touch pad, top left blue led is let showing it is functioning. Press the center button next to the led, which will shut off the internal mouse.
Plug in your mouse to a different USB port and the unit should see the mouse.
If not and the mouse does not light up, replace the mouse.
You may have had a conflict with the internal and external mouse.

Lexmark 1240...

With the Lexmark printers communication subsystem you MUST let the driver ask for you to plug in the printer. DO NOT plug the printer into the USB port until told to do so.

To fix a fouled install:
(1) Uninstall the Lexmark drivers in Add Remove Programs
(2) Shutdown the computer
(3) Disconnect the printer from the USB port
(4) Restart the computer
(5) Run the Driver Installation software
(6) Cancel ALL attempts by windows to auto install the printer
(7) When the software asks for the printer connect it and continue
