Not sure what brand and model of computer you have but this may help...

Try looking for a Chipset utility update from the manufactur of your computer's website for your particular computer model, re-install it if you already installed it.

when a drive stops reading ANY disk it's most likely a bad drive.
if the computer see the drive and ask for a disk, the software and disk driver is operating correctly. laptops generates a lot of heat, and more so when pluged in and charging. CDs,DVDs, and disk drives also generates heat. proper ventalation and a cooling pad will help extend the life of a laptop. if you have acess to a spare laptop drive, you can swap them. windows-7 will see the new drive and should install driver.

Bios does not recognize cd/dvd drive, nor external cd or dvd drives (optical drives). Updated to version 2.0 Bios from Toshiba website, but no success with that either. Is there a fix for this? How can I...

well, only way is to flash your bios.

it should be bootable flash bios tool that will assist you to remove all the current settings to the original settings. but if you can get the memory flash for toshiba then try running the system in safe mode the see if your usb devices can function then you try booting the system with cd/dvd drive. it should work

Dvd's & Cd's are not being read

When this happen the problem is usually the CD drive, even if a virus can cause same problem.
To test if the problem is software, go to bios or boot options, set primary bot device CD/DVD, and start the computer with a boot disk inside. When asked chose boot from CD.

If the computer does not see the dvd drive, and does not ask you if to boot from CD on this conditions, then you have a faulty DVD RW drive.

Try first removing the DVD drive and refitting it in place, after removing battery and unplugging the AC adapter cord.

If that does not work, you usually need to replace the driver, even if on rare circumstances a faulty motherboard can cause the same.
That is however quite unusual.

the most common is a faulty optical drive.

HP CD/DVD optical drive is not recognized

I found that there was a firmware conflict caused by the installation of iTUNES. I uninstalled and cleared the upper and lower filters in the registry and the internal DVD-Rom is recognized. First I cleared the registry and the drive was recognized after a hard boot. So Far no twitches. Knock on wood.
