Change password

Try to factory reset the router by holding the reset button for ten seconds until all lights blink. Then connect a computer to the router via ethernet and open a web browser. Type in 192.168.1.1 if it is a linksys or cisco, 192.168.0.1 if it is a d-link or netgear, or 192.168.2.1 if it is a belkin. Netgear and d-link usually have a sticker with user id and passowrd to access the router. If it is the wifi passphrase you need, then go ahead and reset the router to factoy setting. To change the wifi password, you will need to go toe wireless security settings where they list the options for WEP, WEP2, etc.

SETTING UP WIRELESS SECURITY ON YOUR ROUTER--------

3> at the top click on wireless on the BLACK bar at the top.
4> under wireless click on wireless security on the blue bar.
5> select the security mode as WPA-PERSONAL (best encryption and supported by all devices).
6> select WPA ALGORITHUM as TKIP.
7> in WPA Shared Key type: "superman" or any thing else but it should be at least 8 characters long. and you should remember it as this will be your wireless password.
8> the Group Renewal key should be 3600.
9> Click on save settings at the bottom.

PERSONALIZING YOUR WIRELESS NETWORK NAME--------
1> Under Wireless, click on Basic wireless settings.
2> MODE: mixed

I have a problem to connect to wi-fi which is set up from computer but i can connect to wi-fi that is in public area for example in my college. I tried and set up different network type like wep,wep2...

You need to configure the wireless adapter inside your router,
i.e., pick an SSID, use 'WPA' encryption, and pick a password.

Then, "View Available Wireless Networks".
Select the SSID that you picked.
Enter the password that you picked.

We have a router so that we can have wireless connections in the upstairs of our house. The connection shuts off every 20 min or so. Do you know a solution?

Have you tried moving the computer upstairs to a different place to get the best signal ?
What is the signal strenth?
Have you tried moving the router to a different position?
If your signal strength is quite weak, you may need to get a more powerfull router, like this one http://bestofferbuy.com/2.4GHz-1000mW-High-Power-802.11b/g-WLAN/WiFi/Wireless-Broadband-Router-p-50909.html?currency=GBP&utm_source=gbase&utm_medium=cse&utm_campaign=gbase
they are about twice as expensive.

So I really need help. I have a Linksys (WRT54GS) wireless router upstairs connected to the internet, printers, etc. and a Netgear (WGT624) downstairs connected to a desktop, xbox and laptop. I don't want...

More information is needed.
Is the 'WAN' port on the Netgear router connected to anything?
(cable-modem? DSL-modem?)

How many friends will come over at the same time?
How many 'LAN' ports are on the Linksys? How many ports are "free" ?
How many 'LAN' ports are on the Netgaear? How many ports are "free" ?
How many "spare" Ethernet cables do you have?

Is your goal to provide computer-to-computer connectivity,
or are you just trying to provide Internet access for everybody?

If you are "downstairs", is the wireless signal from the "upstairs" router strong-enough to provide wireless coverage "downstairs"?

Upstairs computer no longer connected. Need to

What is the Operating system on the laptop ?
If it is XP then in the bottom right hand corner you will find Wireless network connection ( looks like 1 computer monitor). Use that icon to connect to the wireless network.
If it is windows Vista, then in the bottom right hand corner you will find 2 computer monitor icon. Use that icon to connect to the wireless network.
If it is Windows 98/ME/2000 then use the adapter utility to connect to the wireless network.
For MAC you will see the AIRPORT icon at the top.

Check the wireless settings of the router first . Make sure that you have all the wireless settings of the router. If you are not sure about the settings, then open the router set up and check the settings.

The router status is saying 'validating identity'. One of the computers in the house is able to connect, but the other one won't.

The computer that will not connect does not have security settings that match the router settings. You need to consult your router manual, determine what those settings are on the rounter, then go into your control panel and under "wireless" set them to match.

Intermittent/non-existant connection with LinkSys WRT54G router

I would get a Range Expander... it sounds like you are having problems recieving a constant signal. When you do get the range expander plug the Range Expander halfway between you upstairs computers and your downstairs where your router is at. I hope this helps!!

Sincerely,

Security

Ok. Firstly you must open up a web browser (Internet Explorer). Then in the address bar....type 192.168.1.1
A message box should pop up asking for a password. Leave the username blank and type admin for the password. That will allow you to change all settings on your router. You must then look for a security tab. In there look for security encryption. WPA/WEP2 either should work. Follow the instructions onscreen to set a password on the router end. Then on your computer you must open your network connection by clicking on the monitor with green waves coming out of it, in the bottom right corner of your taskbar. Then click View Available Wireless networks. Double click your network....type password when prompted....and VIOLA secured :)
