If your solution comes out negative, it will say this because x^2 can never be negative. therefore, your answer is out of the domain of the function and will not register because it isnt a real solution

You tried to use an argument to a function that was not in the function's domain. For example, the arcsine function takes an argument from negative one to positive one. Trying to take the arcsine of 2 will generate a domain error.

You can't simply enter 7x+9=30 into the calculator, there is a way to calculate what the x is but its been a few years since I've done these..

The chi-square test is used for a lot more than just contingency tables.

I found one program for the TI-86 (which is basically the same machine as the TI-85, only with more memory) which claims to do the chi-square goodness of fit test.

You have to turn all statistical plots OFF before you draw function graphs. Press [2nd][Y=] to open the statistical plot configuration screen. Press [4:PlotsOFF] and then [ENTER]. When calculator answers DONE you are ready to draw function plots.

If the message appears when you try to graph functions deactivate the
statistical plots. To do so:

Press [2nd][Y=] to access (STAT PLOTs)

Select [4:PlotsOff] then [ENTER]

That should solve your problem. Post a comment to this thread if you still have trouble graphing.

Press [STAT] to open the Statistics editor. From the menu that displays, select PlotsOFF and press [ENTER] twice. The calculator answers "Done".

Open the [Y=] editor to enter the functions to be drawn. Use the Trace ONLY after the graph has been displayed.

To clear any message without necessarily removing the conditions that yield the error press the CLEAR button.

You can find the chi-square test for two-way tables and the chi-square goodness of fit tests in the STAT TEST menu (STAT Left).

One (or more) of your arguments is outside the domain of possible arguments. For example, with the chi-square density functions the degrees of freedom must be a positive integer.

Could you post the specific function and arguments?
