Bearings or gears out on Zojurushi BBCC-X20 Bread Machine

We use this a lot, and replaced the paddles last year. Now it make a bad bearing noise and the paddles don't turn properly. Can this be fixed by the consumer? I would surely like to save a couple hundred dollars!

Thanks, but we already got a new pan before, and put in the paddles. The current difficulty is with bearings or gears in the machine part, not the bread pan.

I just fixed a similar problem. My issue also started with what sounded like bearing issues, but turned out to be a simple loose nut, but in an aggravatingly difficult place to reach. The nut holding the rotor that drives the paddle was loose, allowing the paddle to slip. The belts in my machine are fine, in fact so massive I can't imagine them breaking. But access? Yikes.

So, forget the screws on the bottom. They just hold on the feet. Remove all the screws around the top of the baking chamber, the two that hold the control panel on, and the remaining screws under it. There are about 12 screws. Remove the 6 at the bottom of the baking chamber, but not the 2 that hold down the element. Remove the metal sides of the baking chamber (it's one piece). All this is to get access to the screws that really hold the works to the base. They're around the perimeter of the metal chassis on which the motor and element are mounted. Remove them (get help or arrange something to keep the control panel from exerting too much pull on the wires to the element. You could unplug the control unit but I didn't need to.)

Once you lift the motor assembly exposing the belts underneath, you'll see what's loose. Each nut holds down a metal plate beneath the rotor. If it gets loose, the rotor can move more or less freely and won't turn. It looks like they applied an inadequate dab of glue to hold those in place. I should have put in a star washer to keep the nut from loosening again. Next time.

A new baking pan will come with the spindles and bearings but no paddles and the price is $55.00 plus shipping. The hopefully your technical ability to change the pan is adequate. You "may" also need a belt that they don't seem to have available.

Pretty tedious work to change out the pan if it is your first time.

Your machine has a lubricating grease that is under the small gasket or washer at the bottom of the pan under each paddle. After a lot of use the little gasket can fail and the grease can get get past the gasket and into your bread. The best thing to do is either replace your pan with what is called a "pan assembly which will include everything but the paddles. If you decide to do that be sure to keep your paddles. The other choice of course is to replace your machine which might not be a bad idea if your machine has been used a lot because you would have a new pan assembly but older parts may begin to fail such as the drive belt. Bread machines aren't all that expensive anymore so you may want to go ahead and replace especially since you just use your machine for making dough.

Hi, If you are doing everything as before and not getting the desired results then it could be that the belts are slipping and not allowing the paddles to fully incorporate all the ingredients. Either that or the paddles themselves are sticking and not moving freely. The belt problem is an easy fix but if the paddles are sticking then it could be the sealed bearings the paddles rotate in is failing and a new bread pan is needed. To check this, take the empty pan and paddles out of the machine and see if you can turn the paddles freely by hand. if no then the sealed bearings are failing. If they turn okay then it could be the belts. Belts and motor are located in the base of the machine. Unplug machine before checking them. Also, make sure the pan is seated correctly in the machine. Have the BBCC-X20 and one of the paddle shafts pulls through easily the other does not. Whats up

Hi,
The sealed bearing on the shaft that pulls out easily is starting to fail. The bearing should have a tight fit and make a good seal. The shaft should not move. Hank

One of the paddles froze after baking a bread. I was able to break it free but it is still stiff

Hi,
Sounds like the sealed bearing that the paddle shaft turns on is starting to fail. Fill the pan 1/2 way with warm water and soak for a few times to see it this helps. If not you should start looking for a new bread pan. Sorry Hank

Rotating shaft will not rotate - during the kneading process nothing happens

Hi,
1) Make sure bread pan is inserted in the machine correctly. 2) Take pan out of the machine and make sure the paddle spins freely on the shaft. ( If not, sealed bearing is frozen and pan needs to be replaced. 3) Keep pan out of machine and start a kneading cycle. Look through the lid window to see if the motor shaft is turning. If not the belt may have come off , snapped or there is something wrong with the motor or curcit board in the machine . Hank
