I can hear music and background noises but no talking when I play a DVD.

Hi, What you are encountering is your receivers playback of a Dolby digital signal with out the proper amount of speakers attached. When using a 5.1 or higher system you must have at least 5 speakers connected. You need front left & right main speakers, then you need a center channel for the voices to play thru. then you want left & right rear speakers for the surround effect. It is possible though to do without these, you just switch the receivers sound field mode from theatre or movie to stereo. I hope this helps, write back to let us know if we did or if we can be of more help and thanks for choosing FixYa,good luck Prodzilla

When playing dvd or or on video 3 playing a directv movie. Receiver keeps shutting off and the screen says protect. Seems to do it when the movie scene gets loud.

check your wires if there not touching behind the speakers and receiver. when it says protect this means something is shorting out or crossing over. one other thing it may be is if a speaker is starting to go bad. (please rate)

When i play my PS3 game the receiver shorts out and shuts off at random points...also does that when watching a movie will just randomly turn off and short out

Hello

Cutting out on the sound is usually a blown IC on the circuit board of the unit itself. This can also result in the player turning off randomly.

Take you receiver to your nearest electronic repair shop, let them replace the blown IC.

This should do the trick.

Kind regards
Andrea

Receiver randomly shuts off during play

This is the "Protect" mode. It is either a bad speaker, or not good ventilation, or a channel going out in the receiver. Please provide more details about the problem so I can help you better. How long is it playing before it shuts off, does it shut off even if the volume is low? Disconnect the speakers form the receiver and then turn it on and let it play without speakers, if it still shuts off then the problem is not the speakers. More information is needed to better diagnose this problem.

First i would strongly suggest that you review your wiring, since the problem occurred after those change , It might also be just coincidence. When you are playing something(music) go around and listen carefully to each of the speakers, check for muffled or distorted sound, that could indicate a speaker or wiring problem. Of course the problem could also be in the receiver. The protection circuit in your amplifier could be acting up(too sensitive), in that case you might need the help from a local repair tech.
Hope this will help Good luck

have you turned it on from the dvd menu the easist way to tell if you have is there will be little speakers that light up on your amps screen (more than two) when the movie is playing (not The menu) Not all movies are encoded in DTS hopefully this helps
