When I turn on my compuer, it stops at displaying "Detecting IDE drives ...'. If I unplug the CD drive ribbon cable from the mother board, the boot-up process will proceeds. Doesn't this mean the CD drive is damaged?

No, not at all. It means that there is a conflict between the hard disk and the cd drive. Please refer if the connection type is with IDE cable (a flat, wide, 40 pins cable) or SATA (a small, collorfull, with few contacts at the sockets) in order to guide you further. The model of the motherboard would be helpfull too.

In case of a problem or clarification, don't hesitate to post me a reply.

Unpluged small ribbon cable from mother board installing hard drive need to know where it plugs in

If it's an IDE cable it goes into the IDE 0 or IDE 1 on the motherboard.
It's your primary drive so it should go into the lowest number.

If it's an sata drive the and it's your primary drive it goes into the lowest numbered sata port on the motherboard.

Please try attaching the desktar at a different cable aside from the master, use another cable, attaching it to another IDE cable. In short, dont have the WD and the deskstar on one IDE ribbon.

Ribbon installition

Is it ide or sata drives you are using?

Guessing ide as sat have no jumper but best to check :)

Sett all the 3 drives jumpers to "cable select" and then just make sure you hard drive is in the master ide channel and on the end of the cable.

Had some problem with connecting the DVD drive to the PC

Depend on what you have in your system already. If your are replacing and existing drive simply remove it, and replace on the same IDE cable making sure the jumper is set to slave. Assuming you have one drive to the 0-IDE connector and the other connector is is to existing CD and this new drive is to be a second one. You will need another IDE ribbon cable. Set the drive to Master- connect the cale. position and fix the drive and plug the other end on the cable to the second IDE connector [Drive 01] See you mother board manual - connected a spere power connector.
