Re: wont read discs
Wash dvd or cd in warm soapy water then dry with very soft clean cloth, going from the center in a straight line to the outer edge. if this does not solve the problem do a system restore to the last date when you where able to do it. hope this helps

Have you checked your CD roms? Maybe they are already defective. Try running them in a CD player to see if they run smoothly. Sometimes, the onboard driver update mechanism isn't that consistent with its result. I suggest that you use RadarSync to scan your computer to see if your drivers are updated. RadarSync is a specialized PC Driver Update Software. You can scan your computer using the free version but if you want it to update the drivers then you can buy a year or two years subscription of the software to keep your drivers updated.
This player is compactable with DVDs, ACDs, Video CDS, CDs and JPEG files. You can't play the following type of discs. Laser discs, CD-1, CD-ROM, DVD-ROM, or discs recorded using other boradcast standards (ie PAL or SECAM); CDG discs.
If you want the user manual to this player, inform me by fixya comment, along with your email address. I'll send a copy of the user manual to you by return mail. It has all details. I can't send it to you by this window, as it does not allow ma to upload PDF files by it. http://www.dataentryjobs.us/67948.html
Based on the one and only specs sheet I could find for this model of emachine, it does have a DVD-ROM drive. So in theory it can. Does the unit play DVD Movies? if yes then it should work, try rebooting and then putting the disc in again. I assume the disc is clean and scratch free as the game is new.
If the OS on your computer has ever been reinstalled, you may be missing the driver for the drive, in which case windows would treat it as a generic CD-ROM drive, and not be able to read DVDs, you can get the drivers for the drive from the emachines website if this is the case.
you were saying some? and not all the cds and dvds? it may be that those other discs are unreadable anymore caused by scratches, marks, or the like. if other discs can be read then the player is all good. also check what file format you are trying to play. it may also be that the file format you are playing is not compatible with the program you are using to play it with like windows media player, media classic, etc.
