Have you by chance got it wet, salt water? Have it checked by a reputable repair shop, and if it has gotten salt into it, best look for a new unit!

Grit destroys these cameras, get a good dust proof case or bag and avoid sand, water, and dust.

When I try to take a picture you hear a clicking noise and the flash is working but it will not take a picture

You may be too close to your subject and the autofocus is not locking in. back up a few inches and the shutter should go off. Try turning off auto-focus.
If this isn't the case it could be a shutter problem. Turn off the flash (if you don't you'll get blinded during my next step) look inside the barrel of the lens and click the shutter...you should see a little flicker inside the lens as you hit the shutter button. If you do see it, then it is in fact just the shutter...if not it's the camera itself. Be sure you are holding the shutter button down completely...as halfway only allows you o focus.

I couldn't get the Nikon ML-L3 Remote Control to work on my Nikon D40x when I was using the external flash (SB-900). When I took it off, it worked fine. Is there a way to get it to work with the external...

Set the camera's release mode to one of the two remote modes. Quick-response remote mode fires the shutter when you press the button on the remote. Delayed remote mode gives you two seconds to hide the remote behind your back before firing the shutter.

To set the camera's release mode, press the button to bring up the information display. Press the button to put the cursor into the information display. Use the cursor keys to highlight the release mode (fifth item from the top along the right edge) and press OK. Use the cursor keys to highlight the desired mode and press OK.

Full details are in the manual in the "Release Mode" section (page 53 in my copy).

The flash is not working.... when you put the flash on, a red dot is blinking , & the shoot button is sluggish

The blinking red light means that the flash is charging. All compact digital cameras have a delay when the shutter release button is pressed. Press it halfway down to autofocus, then all the way down when you are ready to take a picture.

Flash Problem

Hey tombston,
An error code of 99 is Canons general error code for this camera, and they suggest cleaning the lens contacts and/or removing the battery and then reinserting it. If this doesn’t work I would try resetting the camera to the default factory settings, and directions on how to do this are on page 35 of your camera manual. If this doesn't work I would have the camera looked at by an authorized service technician. I have included a link to a PDF download of the camera manual in case you need it. I hope this helps!

Dropped the camera and now...

Sounds like the chassis under the shutter button has somehow distanced itself from the shutter release button, maybe bent away from the button? Its s stretch but that maybe the problem. The button is designed to have 2 contacts in it, the autofocus switch and the shutter release depending on how much you press it, like most cameras
