Question about Dell Dimension 8400 PC Desktop

Won't turn on


this is the first time this has ever happened. The light in the power button is blinking amber and the computer won't turn on. I've tried diconnecting the power source, and if I hold the power button in for about 15 seconds it shuts off. But when I turn it on again it does the same thing if you could help i sure would appreciate it

If you are able ,open the box,earth yourself out on it (static can damage things) if you have more than one stick of ram take them out ,and try booting up with one stick at a time, in the first ram slot ,if you find one that does not boot the system up its the bad one ,reinsert what ever other sticks you have , problem solved.

if not ,replace all ram chips, then

  • remove any ad in cards that you have, one at a time (other than a video card if you have one) then try booting,
  • if you have gone through all the cards (not the video as mentioned before) and still not booting, remove everything including the video card ,ram, disconnect all drives ,
  • if you hear no beeps then the most likely problem is the motherboard ,
  • but have known power supplies that fluctuate to cause the same problem.

Is the computer plugged in to a known good power source with a known good power cord? Also, make sure the power is fully seated on both ends. When you press the power button are you getting any indicator lights? The power button itself has an LED that will be either solid green, blinking green, solid amber, blinking amber, or off. Do you hear any beeps?

If the power light is blinking amber, the computer is receiving electrical power, but an internal power problem might exist.A power supply or system board failure has occurred. Try to isolate the problem by removing or disconnecting all cards, i.e. video, sound cards and disconnecting CD/DVD and hard drives.

An Amber blinking power button indicates a low voltage problem. This can be caused by a defective power supply or a defective motherboard. Since you replaced the power supply, my guess is that the motherboard has a problem.
Just to make sure that nothing else is causing the problem, remove any PCI cards like modem, video card, sound card, etc... Remove the memory modules and disconnect cables to CD/DVD drives. Look at the USB ports to see if any are damaged.

I think your problem is your memory or video card.

Below are some steps that I recommend.

When you plug in the power cord is there any lights whatsoever on the computer?

When you press the power button do you hear fans running, hard drive spinning, lights on the computer, hear any beeps or lights constantly blinking, hear the DvD/CD drive click and the light on the drawer of the DvD/CD turn on for a second or two? If so the laptop is trying to boot or may have booted, but the screen is not showing for some reason.

Beep tones and blinking lights tells the technicians what is going on with the computer and why it is not booting. Most times it's a motherboard issue when you hear beeps or blinking lights continuous. Most times the problem is with the memory or Video Card. Count the Blinking Lights or Beeps and take note of their pattern (1 Long or 1 Long followed by 2 Short).

Maybe your power cord is bad if you don't get anything to happen whatsoever when you press the power button.

Maybe you have a Static Charge Buildup. Remove the Power Cord, then Press and Hold the power button for 30 seconds. After 30 seconds plug the power cord back in and hit the power button to see if it boots.

Maybe your memory is bad or the memory slot is bad.

Remove the Power Cord, Open the Case and remove one of the memory chips. Set the chip aside then try rebooting the computer. If it boots, then you know the memory chip you set aside is bad so mark an x on it with an ink pen. If it fails to boot then move the chip to the next memory slot and try rebooting. If it fails take the chip out and set it aside, then put the other chip in and try booting it in both slots. If it boots, just to verify that the chip set aside is bad, mark an x on it and put it into the open memory chip slot and try booting.

Maybe your power supply is bad. Sometimes there is enough power to make the power light or some other lights come on but not enough power to make the fan turn on or hard drive spin.

I turned on my Dell Dimension 4700 computer,but the amber light started to blink . I held the start up button for 5 seconds and the light went out. I tried to start it up again and got the same thing,...


Vaughn it sounds like the power supply is going bad, try another known good working power supply. If that doesn't work then the motherboard would need to be replaced. If the power supply isn't giving the correct voltages that could cause the computer not to turn on. If the motheboard isn't able to convert the voltages properly then the motherboard could be faulty.

Blinking amber light with green 4 light


If the power light is blinking amber, the computer is receiving electrical power, but an internal power problem might exist.
Try, unplugging the power cable from the pc, and reinsert it, if this does not help try a differnt power outlet, if this dont help, open the computer, take the power Molex conector out of the mother board and try turning it on, if this dont help, take out the Memory modules and reseat them, if this dont work you may want to ring up dell support.

The power light blinks all the time


Does your machine turn on? Is the blinking light red or amber? If you have it plugged into a UPS or surge protector try directly into wall socket.
Please give a little more description, also what was the last thing you did before this happened?
