Did you install the software before plugging in the data cable? What OS are you using? If you use the included software - click Start > All Programs > PhotoStudio 5.5 (or ArcSoft PhotoStudio) (Windows directions)

In this program, File > Select Source (scanner), then File > Acquire Scan and Select Source (photo, document, etc), then Preview. Next choose Destination (Print or Image Display which selects the DPI for the scan). Next choose Output Size, finally click Scan. When the scan finishes, click the x to close the ScanGear CS window. In the main program you can now save the scan.

It may be easier to use the Scan button on the scanner if the full software package is installed. This opens the PhotoStudio software if the program was installed properly.

Some OS's have other scan software options. Vista and Windows 7 can acquire scans in Paint (File, Import from Camera or scanner). Windows 7 (excluding Starter) comes with Windows Fax and Scan (new scan).

I hope this helps.

Canon and other Scanners have both hardware and software buttons to scan documents and photographs.
Scanning with a computer is done with a destination in mind. So the buttons and the software are associated with destinations.
Typical destinations are File, email, Application, and print.
In a simple scan process for copy or print, the item is placed face down on the scanner, then the print button is pressed on the front of the scanner.
The software for the scanner pops up on the screen and the scanner moves the imaging light across the scanner under the glass, reading the item on the scanner. The software sends the image to the default printer and it prints a copy.

You will need to setup your preferences in the software so that a photograph is scanned properly and a newspaper article is scanned to come out clear black and white.
Documents are best saved as PDF files and photographs as TIFF files.
The software will have an expert mode where you can change all the settings and a beginner mode where you let the software decide.
Canon has a great document for your scanner. If it is not on the disk, here is the link. It is called CanoScan 4200F Scanning Guide. I think it will help you to use the scanner for any task.

I have just bought a HP Photosmart plus B210 printer. I have installed it ok and it is wireless connected. everything seems ok for printing but when I try to scan to Paint shop Pro 7 or from Word 2003 it...

Hello Carol,

The first thing you want to do is check to make sure the scanner driver is installed properly and working.

If you are running Windows XP or Vista; go to Start Menu \ Control Panel \ Scanners and Cameras
NOTE: For Vista user you must select "classic view" in control panel to see scanners an cameras.

For Windows 7; go to your Start Menu, in the "search programs and files" section (found below "all programs") type in "scan". You will see a result for View Scanners and Cameras.

Now you should see the HP scanner here. If it is not here then you need to reinstall because the scanner was not installed properly. If the scanner is here, right click on it and select Properties. (For Windows 7 you do not have to right click, you will see Properties at the bottom of the window).

In the properties select "test scanner". If this test fails, the driver is not working and you should uninstall and reinstall the HP.

If this test works then the driver is properly installed. HP should have provided you with some sort of scanning software, try scanning using that. You can also try scanning using Windows Fax and scan (for windows 7), Windows Photo Gallery (Windows Vista) or the Windows Scan wizard (Windows XP).

Thanks,

Pat

Acer 1240UT scanner not working with vista

The new drivers off of HP are a basic version which give you none of the nice features of the 7400c.
The seem to have discontinued the scanner and now just give you a basic set up which sucks.
It will work under the Windows Fax and Scan but don't be looking to scan an individual picture, crop it and save it as anything other than a jpg or bitmap... lessons to be learned, don't lose your original discs!!! does anyone out there have the original software?? please help

L7780 won't scan

First test: try a photocopy to check the scanner is actually working. If copy is blank or defective then you have a faulty scanner.

Second test: are you scanning to device/PC by USB cable or network. Network scanning is notoriously fickle and may need you to completely uninstall and then completely re-install the device. You may also need to remove all references to the scanner in you registry. If scanning by wireless - forget it and use a cable.

Lexmark 1270 scans but will not print

With the Lexmark printers communication subsystem you MUST let the driver ask for you to plug in the printer. DO NOT plug the printer into the USB port until told to do so.

To fix a fouled install :
(1) Uninstall the Lexmark drivers in Add Remove Programs
(2) Shutdown the computer
(3) Disconnect the printer from the USB port
(4) Restart the computer
(5) Run the Driver Installation software
(6) Cancel ALL attempts by windows to auto install the printer
(7) When the sofware asks for the printer connect it and continue
