you cant delete anything that has been burnt to a disk unless its a its a dvd -rw
Short for DVD-ReWritable, a re-recordable DVD format similar to CD-RW or DVD+RW. The data on a DVD-RW disc can be erased and recorded over numerous times without damaging the medium. DVD-R, DVD-RW and DVD-RAM are supported by Panasonic, Toshiba, Apple Computer, Hitachi, NEC, Pioneer, Samsung and Sharp. These formats are also supported by the DVD Forum.

What is the difference between a DVD+RW and a DVD-RW.

DVD-RW
It is the re-recordable version of the DVD-R. To use this type of media you will need to buy a DVD-RW recorder. The DVD-RW recorders usually record DVD-R, CD-R and CD-RW media, too. Similarly to what happens to DVD-R, DVD-RW disks can be played in newer commercial DVD players without any problems. Older commercial devices cannot recognize the media, refusing to play the disk. To play a DVD-RW disk, commercial players need the disk to be finished. After finishing the disk, you can only record new data in it by reformatting it, which makes you lose all the recorded data.

DVD+RW

It is the re-recordable version of the DVD+R and everything that was said about the DVD+R is valid for the DVD+RW. Only the newest DVD players play movies recorded in disks using this format. There are recorders on the market that can record both DVD-RW disks and DVD+RW ones. These recorders are called DVD?±RW. Similarly to the DVD-RW, the disk needs to be finished to be played in commercial DVD players, and to record new data in the disk after having finished it requires reformatting it, which makes all the data in it to be erased. DVD+RW recorders are usually capable of reading DVD-RW disks (but not of recording them) and vice-versa.

There you are.

When I put a DVD+RW disk in trys to format the disk then says the disk is protected. If I open and close the door it trys to format the disk again

It may be the brand of disc you are using. Have you tried any other brands? Have you tried DVD-RW? Might make a difference. I'm using DVD-RW and most of them work flawlesly.

Cd/dvd isnt recognized in windows xp

There are many compatibility issues still with CD/DVD formats and disk drive manufacturer's.
Check the format of the disk (CD-RW, CD+RW, etc...)
Sounds like the drive isn't recognizing the format this disk was written in. Google CD/DVD format types for a better understanding.

DVD+RW compatibility

your dvd only writes to dvd-r and dvd-rw, but writes to both cdr + and - r/rw. To confirm it go into nero tools and nero info tools and all the ticks in the boxes are what your drive supports

Formating problem

Are you using dvd-rw(+) or dvd-rw(-). Have you tried updating the firmware? http://www.emersonaudiovideo.com/pdf/om/EWR10D4.pdf Minus (-R/-RW) and Plus (+R/+RW) The formats endorsed by the DVD Forum (www.dvdforum.org) have a hyphen in their names and are verbalized as "DVD Minus R" or "DVD Dash R" (DVD-R) and "DVD Minus RW" or "DVD Dash RW" (DVD-RW). The competing formats from the DVD+RW Alliance (www.dvdrw.com) use a plus sign: "DVD Plus R" (DVD+R) and "DVD Plus RW" (DVD+RW). Starting in 2002, drives that supported both Minus and Plus formats were introduced. Make sure you are using the proper dvd disc. Let me know what happens. Good Luck, Tim
