Question about Mitsubishi PD-5010 50 in. Plasma Television

Mitsubishi PD-5010 flex cable repair

I have a Mitsubishi PD-5010 50" plasma with black lines in the picture. I have found the ribbon cables along the top and bottom and have found that at each black line, there is a burned out component integrated into the cable. Each cable has 2 of these components. I can't see any solder joints and I see no way to removing it and it looks like it has some type of resin around the perimeter. Can this thing be repaired or replaced?

The cable on the right you can see the two grey bars integrated into the ribbon cable.

Here you can see the underside. The left component has burn marks on either side.

I realize the consensus answer is "it is not repairable". I've got nothing to lose so I'm looking for what might possibly work or what I should try and not "it can't be fixed".

Even if I could repair a few of these lines, that would be great.

    Thanks!

In the case that it can't be repaired, I am looking for some options.

Where could I get a new display if I wanted to replace it?

Rather than just throwing it in the trash, is there somewhere that could scrap it out? Is there a

What exactly are those gray bars? The seem to distribute the signal from the board to the panel itself. Do they have a name?

If I wanted to try and sell it off piece by piece for parts, where could I find a list of what other plasma models these parts could be used in? Is there a database or list published somewhere that says the power board, for example, could is also used in a different model (or even a different manufacturer)?

Unfortunately, these cables are part of the panel assembly and are not replaceable. Your only recourse at this point is to replace the panel.

This can be ordered using part number PDP-5010 at a cost of $2750.

I suspect that a repalcement can be obtained for less than that. I'm sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but those are your only options.

Dan

Go to the link below and enter using the "Guest" tab. At the next screen, click on the US Dollar tab.

That will bring you to a screen for you to enter the model number. Enter PD5010 and you will get a list of the replacement parts available. This might give you an idea of the parts that you can sell.

    Hope this helps,

    Dan

Hi,

All plasma and LCD ts have boards that control vertical and horizontal output to their respective areas. They are connected to the screen by ribbon cables. If one of these boards fails all together, has a failed chip, a bad connection, or a bad ground somewhere it will result in a black line in the area of that board. A bad ribbon cable connection on the bottom will result in a vertical black bar though the screen. Many times resetting the connection will fix it, if the ribbon cable has been nicked there could be a severed connection. They an sometimes be fixed, but it is a pain. An yes I have done it, but the bar is gone. The same will happen if the chip that outputs to that area opens. The connectors are the first place to look paying close attention to the cable, they are extremely delicate so great care must be taken if you decide to tinker with em, the usually have lift locks that release them.

Good luck in solving the problem.....

I have 2x2" black vertical lines on my plasma screen. Is this the end of it's life or can they be tuned out? Rod

There are 4 or 5 ribbon cables on the bottom or on one side, they control part of the plasma screen. Check the ribbon cable near the black lines. Unplug the ribbon cable and look for black chips on the underside of it, I think they say 100 on them, you need to resolder both ends on each chip. Should fix the black line issue.

Pink Lines Top to Bottom

The screen has failed. It has about 14 ribbons running along the bottom edge that connect the Boards to the screen, it is glued to the glass and not replaceable. One of the 1000 or so contacts have failed.

It is not good news though at all, screens are shockingly expensive.

Sorry.

Black bar

On a non H.Def plasma, there is a PCB that runs along the bottom of the screen that is attached to the screen by a several brown/gold colored flat ribbon cables. I've seen where this ribbon cable is not seated properly in the jack. The ribbon cables are generally responsible for that section of the screen. Next possibility is the PCB itself is defective.
Not to scare you, but the plasma screen itself is a possible suspect.
