Question about Linksys Wireless-G Broadband Router

1 Answer

Lost internet on my desktop which uses wireless lan card and antenna to connect to linksys wireless g

I have a HP Pavilion Media Center m8226x desktop. My girlfriend has a clearwire wireless modem to connect to the internet on her HP Pavilion Slimline. She set up her Linksys Wireless-G Broadband Router (Model WRT54G) 802.11g so that I could pick up internet on my desktop. She had me run the Linsys Setup Wizard CD (ver. 8.0) and I attached the antenna that came with my computer to the Wireless LAN card connector in the back. I had internet and everything was fine for about a week. Then, the other day, the internet suddenly stopped on my desktop. She still has hers but mine is gone. I used Windows Vista and HP programs on my computer extensively to try to fix the issue. Here's what I've found:

  1. In the "Windows Netword Diagnostics" window I get a message that says "A cable is not plugged into the network adapter "Local Area Connection" Plug a cable into the network adapter "Local Area Connection". ** The antenna is securely connected. Apart from that, I'm lost.
  2. When I try to "connect to a network" I get the message "Windows cannot find any networks."
  3. In the "Network Sharing Center", when I clicked on "View Full Map" I received the message "The Adapter is not connected."
  4. In the "Network and Internet window, under "Network Connections" I see: LAN or High-Speed Internet (1) Local Area Connection, Network Cable Unplugged, Nvidia nForce Networking Controller
  5. The Detailed Device Information shows "false" next to "Adapter Connected"
  6. The driver is present. It is version 6.2.0.126,6-21-2006
  7. I just bought this computer two weeks ago from Circuit City. It was a display model. They restored the factory settings before selling it to me.
I have been messing around with the various diagnostice tools for 2 days now. I also went onto my girlfriend's computer to see if hers had blocked mine for some reason but that doesn't seem to be the case. She's out of town until later tonight and she will probably wave her magic wand and make it all better, but then again, maybe she'll be stumped too. I'm at my wit's end here. Could someone please help? Thanks.

Brian

If you mean the wifi pin you will need to log in to the router to find it. This is fairly simple and goes as follows. Enter 192.168.1.1 into the address bar of your browserd_schrute.png
The default username and password are: (blank username) password:admin (lower case)
Click on the 'wireless' tab at the top of the web admin page
Click on the 'wireless security' sub-tab
the pin should be displayed.

To connect to your wireless router, the router's wireless settings needs to be configured with the SSID, encryption etc. and also the wireless cards in all the laptops/computers needs to be configured with these router's wireless settings. Then the laptops/desktop computers can communicate with your wireless router.
Connect a LAN cable from the Linksys to the LAN port on your computer.
Open a browser and enter the Linksys configuration URL
http://192.168.1.1
The default login = admin
The default PW = admin
You can protect your router by changing the default admin PW (write it down and put it in a safe place)
Go to the wireless configuration and set up the SSID and WPA or WPA2 encryption to protect your wireless network and Internet from unauthorized access.
Now apply these settings to the wireless card in your laptop/computer.

If you can connect to the Internet using the LAN cable then your Internet connection is OK.
If you are trying to connect to the Internet using the wireless connection, then your problem is the wireless settings in either the Linksys or the wireless card in your computer.
First check the wireless settings in the Linksys, ie. the SSID and encryption key.
Second check the wireless settings in the computer's wireless card, this must match the route's wireless settings. If it matched then do a Repair connection. this will get the Linksys to issue a new IP address to the wireless card.computer.
If the Linksys wireless settings were changed then configure the wireless card in the computer with these new settings.

2.4GHz Wireless Lan And 5 GHz Wireless LAN

this is usually caused by your router and your wireless network card are not compatible... you need to purchase as well cisco wireless network card adn tehn when you press your wireless security on the router, it will automatically apply all security protocol to the connection.

if you do not want to purchase new card, you always can setup these devices manually,

connect to the router via rj45 cable, establish what protocol, security and transmission method/frequency you will be using, write that down, disconnect the cable, enter your wireless network card settings and apply same settings to your network card, this should solve the problem.

as you did not stated what operating system you are using and what card is in your computer, this is unfortunately best advice which can be given.

how to set up your router, you have downloadable pdf file on linksys site.

Unidentified network which has limited connectivity

You're network card may be disabled, and that would be why you are unable to connect to yout network/the internet through your network card, to check this go to your network settings, right click on the "Local Area Connection" and if the option is there to "enable" then click it because your card has been disabled, if disable is there in stead then I'm stumped. with regards to "unidentified network" This usually comes up when someone has a wireless network created, but they have the settings made to not broadcast (show) the SSID (name) of the network. This is done for extra security, because in order for someone to connect to the wireless signal they need to know the type of encryption used, the key or passphrase for the encryption and on top of that the network name. Limited connectivity means that you are "connected" only in the sense that you can see the network connection, but you are unable to do anything with it.

Fast Flashing Light - no Internet connection

Well, i also had a wrt54g router.Generally that type of router is only for a networkwith one, two max wireless items. When the led light is flashing very fast, it means it is working very hard. You may need to get a stronger router such as the wrt300n which can handle up to about 10 items. By the way, netgear routers are generally stronger and longer lasting than linksys.
