Question about Kenmore 22422 Top Load Washer
First, see the Sears parts site for your washer:
I'd look at each of the diagrams in detail and try to determine which part it may be.
I'd also check the following Whirlpool / Kenmore Service manual for these washers as well as the Whirlpool parts list for their top load commercial washers (although the consumer models are basically the same.)

Also see the Whirlpool Parts list for their Commercial washers, although the consumer models use the same transmission.
What you're describing might be a Filter Plug that fits in the bottom of the basket. See Item # 12 in the Agitator / Basket/ Tub diagram.
As for the water draining out, it's possible that the drain hose is damaged or the end of it isn't above the water level.
I'd pull the cabinet to check the hoses and pump. See the following:
