Defrost timer does not advance after defrost

Hi,

During this time of defrost you manually advanced into, Did the heater turn off them self? If they did the defrost thermostat does work, if the heaters stayed on the entire time (1hr) than the thermostat needs to be replaced as well as the timer. The thermostat is a cut off device to prevent the over heating of the freezer and liner (safety device). Think of a defrost timer as an egg timer, this timer runs regardless of function just advances like a clock. The thermostat turns off the heaters when they reach a temp rather then time. I hope this answered your question, good luck

Compressor and fan stop working

There is a possibility that the defrost timer turned the compressor and fans off and stuck in the defrost lobe of the defrost timer. I want you to try turning the defrost timer slowly clockwise. The defrost timer is in location 257 behind the control panel inside the fresh food compartment. Here is a photo of the parts location HERE
If doing this causes the refrigerator to work again then replace the=> WR9X489 Defrost Timer

If this does not work I want you to try something else so let me know what happens Thanks

Freezer works but fridge does not

Lets see if the defrost timer being turned clockwise slowly will force defrost and cause things to get colder. On page 5 of the (click HERE=>ET4WSKXKQ02 Parts Manual ) you will see location 4? That is the 2188371 Defrost Timer
a17e87fd-de4a-4c2d-8f91-387a705d8efc.jpg

inside the fresh food com[partment at the top and behind the control panel will be the 2188371 Defrost Timer If forcing defrost solves the cooling problem then just replace the 2188371 Defrost Timer and if not we will need to check the 2176942 Defrost Heater Assembly and the 2192096 Defrost Thermostat Don't buy ba defrost thermostat until we discuss a different way of getting one to work should you need one (last resort because of cost) My focus is defrost timer and defrost heater at this point you will not need all the wires on the defrost thermostat should you need one just splice a simple defrost thermostat into the wiring harness. Below is a short movie on testing the defrost heater or click HERE Talk with me and we will get this refrigerator working, Sea Breeze

How to set the defrost duration on a timer

Copy following link for defrost timers:
http://waterheatertimer.org/Paragon-timers-and-manuals.html#defrost

There are 2 general types defrost timers.
Time activated - Time terminated
Time activated - Temperature-pressure terminated, with timed termination back-up

Here is basic image:
http://waterheatertimer.org/images/8145-work-image.jpg
Rotate dial until current time lines up with pointer, insert tripper pin on outside edge of dial to select defrost start-time, move defrost duration tripper on inner dial to set termination time.

Each defrost timer is slightly different:
If timer is time-terminated, then wiring follows certain diagram.
If timer is temperature-pressure terminated, then different wiring diagram is used.

Wiring a defrost timer to a heatcraft condensing unit

Which defrost timer do you have?
Do you have time or temperature termination?
What voltage are you working with?

Without doing the minimal setting test to see if a time clock works how do you test a time clock with defrost termination the x terminal

8145-20 is 240Volt defrost timer:
http://waterheatertimer.org/Paragon-timers-and-manuals.html#8045

You are testing the 8145-20 timer.
The timer dial should rotate continuously. Trippers on dial rotate around. When they reach the trip switch, the timer starts the defrost cycle.
Terminal 3 has power during defrost cycle.
Terminal 4 has no power during defrost cycle.
With 240Volt timer, terminals 1 and 2 and N and X test for live power to ground at all times.

The limit switch is connected to terminal X and to terminal N.
During the defrost cycle, the limit switch measures the pressure or temperature.
When pressure or temperature reaches the set point, the limit switch closes the circuit and this trips the solenoid inside timer. The solenoid turns off the timer relay, and the defrost cycle ends.
At this point the timer turns off the defrost, and sends power to the refrigeration.
Terminal 3 has no power during refrigeration cycle. (The opposite of defrost cycle).
Terminal 4 has power during refrigeration cycle.
Test these terminals for power to ground. One or the other should have power at all times, but not both.

If timer will not enter defrost cycle, make sure the X-3596 trippers are not worn down.
Disconnect the wire to terminal X and see if defrost cycle will start.
Test terminals 3 and 4 again and see if removing wire from X caused a change.

I have a paragon 8145-20 defrost timer. do you wire the compressor to the timer? I cant seem to find a wiring diagram on how to wire this correctly

Link below has wiring diagrams and wiring manuals for 240V 8145-20
http://waterheatertimer.org/Paragon-timers-and-manuals.html#defrost

I am not expert installing defrost timers.
According to information from Paragon, 8145 is for hot gas defrosting. 8140 series are time initiated, and pressure-or-temperature terminated.
Wiring diagram does not show compressor wired to timer.

The cycle works like this:
Timer is running but defrost is not switched ON.
Fan is ON.
Timer switches ON and activates defrost cycle.
Fan turns OFF. Hot gas valve turns ON for defrosting.
Cycle limit switch is temperature or pressure sensitive.
Cycle limit switch reaches trip point, timer switches OFF.
Hot gas valve turns OFF. Fan turns ON.
So fan is off during defrost cycle.
Hot gas valve turns ON when timer switches ON.
Timer is switched OFF by pressure-or-temperature limit switch.

Everything in ref freezing up

1)check the temperature setting.it should be set on normal mode. 2) check if the ventilation in the fridge are blocked .there are two possibilities you will have to check 1)the defrost timer 2)the evaporator coil. How a common frost free defrost cycle works and the main parts. When the refrigerator is running ( cooling mode ) the defrost timer contacts prevents any power from getting to the defrost heater. When the defrost timer turns off the power to the compressor and fan motor(s) the power is then redirected to the defrost system. The defrost timer motor. Defrost timers:
The defrost timer is sometimes found behind the front grill of the refrigerator. It may also be found behind a cover plate inside the refrigerator or freezer, in the temperature control console, or behind the refrigerator near the compressor.
The timer is usually held in place with one or more screws. Remove the screws and gently pull the timer out far enough to disconnect the wiring connector.
Locate the timer switch and turn it clockwise until you hear it click. One click and the refrigerator shuts off = defrost mode, second click the compressor and fans come back on = run/cooling mode.
*Some defrost timers are a constant or continuous run timer, which means when ever the refrigerator is plugged in the defrost timer is powered up and running. Some defrost timers are an accumulative run timer, which means when the refrigerator is off the defrost timer is off and not running, when the refrigerator is running the defrost timer is running. This is also sometimes called a demand defrost. The power for the defrost timer goes through the cold control first on an accumulative defrost system. The timers are often the same but will be wired differently to get the different operations.
------
the evaporator coils are located at the inner side of the freezer section.if the ice gets collected in the coil and the evaporator fan stops running then the inner system of refrigerator will get over cool and this problem happens.
--------
now to solve the issue .if to check evaporator coil is faulty or not there is a system.just unplug the unit from main power outlet then wait for 24 hours.then replug the power cord in the main power outlet.in 24 hours all the ice collected in between the coil and anywhere will get melted and then check out.if it works properly the problem was ice in coils.but if same problem then defrost timer needs replacement, you can get new timer friom

This will help. Thanks please keep updated.please do rate the solution positively .thank you for using fixya.

GE Fridge not cooling well, frost in freezer, back wall and coils

How to check everything
http://www.acmehowto.com/howto/appliance/refrigerator/refrigerator.php
check defrost timer, defrost heater, defrost thermostat. In most newer models the timer has been replaced by an electronic control board. If the heater and thermostat are ok it’ll be the control.

You can turn the defrost timer till it clicks and everything shuts down. The heater should now come on. If it does, replace the timer. If it doesn't, check the heater and defrost thermostat. Turn the timer again till everything starts back up to end the defrost cycle.
