Question about Heating & Cooling

2 Answers

I'm having a problem finding any data on this unit. I'm a mechanical engineer doing an energy audit and there are 30 or so of these units that were installed around 1998 - 2000 at a Naval facility. I'm looking for the a replacement for these that I can recommend that will have the highest SEER and payback available.

How many rooms per unit? 1 room 1 ton of air 2 rooms 2 tons 3 rooms 3 tons Thats basic rule of thumb. Have you seen the latest solar assisted units from Lennox? I am seriously thinking about investing in that direction. 86% savings are projected IF enough solar panels are installed. Can you say Wowser?

Air Conditioner SEER Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio

Energy consumption for home air conditioning accounts for almost 5% of all the electricity produced in the USA. Energy Policy Act mandates minimum energy efficiency standards for commercial buildings, using research and standards developed by the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating, and Air Conditioning Engineers. Energy Star qualified central air conditioners have a higher seasonal efficiency rating (SEER) than standard models, which makes them about 14% more efficient than standard models. Energy efficiency specialists with certified training on retrofits and energy savings on both residential and light commercial units may enable you to save up to 50 percent on your air conditioning bills with the use of a high efficiency energy system. Substantial energy savings can be obtained from more efficient systems.

SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio) is related to the Energy Efficiency Ratio (EER), which is the ratio of output cooling in Btu/Hr and the input power in watts W at a given operating point and also to the coefficient of performance (COP) commonly used in thermodynamics. SEER rating more accurately reflects overall system efficiency on a seasonal basis and EER reflects the system’s energy efficiency at peak day operations.

The SEER rating is the Btu of cooling output during a typical cooling-season divided by the total electric energy input in watt-hours during the same period. SEER is related to the Energy Efficiency Ratio (EER), which is the ratio of output cooling in Btu/Hr and the input power in watts W at a given operating point and also to the coefficient of performance (COP) commonly used in thermodynamics. SEER rating more accurately reflects overall system efficiency on a seasonal basis and EER reflects the system’s energy efficiency at peak day operations. The higher the SEER number, the greater the efficiency of your unit. Therefore you will realize greater energy savings. The higher efficiency your product, the lower your long-term energy costs will be. Both central AC and air source heat pumps are rated according to seasonal energy efficiency ratio (SEER).

Before you consider upgrading your cooling equipment, the cheapest way to save money and energy from cooling is to reduce the need for mechanical air conditioning in the first place. Ask your contractor about a variable speed air handler, which will improve comfort and efficiency and allow continuous air filtering at minimum energy cost. Also, because ducts are often responsible for a lot of wasted energy, make sure you hire a contractor who knows about high-efficiency installations. If your central air conditioning unit is more than 12 years old, replacing it with an Energy Star qualified model could cut your cooling costs by 30 percent.

I have air energy 2 heat pump there is power from 30 amp breaker to 30 amp disconnect to panel on pump. When compressor kicks on 30 amp breaker blows. ????

Does compressor run at all? If not, could be shorted or grounded. Might aslo check connections to compressor. Make sure none are worn and making contact with any metal on unit.

I had an Air Conditioner installed and the company has since gone out of business, now with an upcoming energy audit, i need to find my ARI and Evaporator Coil # from my RHEEM A/C. Any suggestions?

The number should be on your furnace or air handler (The thing that's inside your house) It should have a m# on the inside of the door. Make sure unit is off when you remove door. As far as the ARI hopefully once you take down that number you can go online and find the rest of the info about your unit.

I have baseboard electric heat. My units are 27 years old. I'd like to replace with more efficient units but can't find any comparitive data.

Hummm, well, the newer units are trying to meet or exceed energy standards, so good on you for updating. You can look at Consumer Reports data to see which is best, but this method of heat does not lend itself to the same refinements as a gas furnace, for example.
I prefer units that have oil, or fans. The oil filled gives heat without having the heating element energized.
The fan units heat the room much better, but this is often NOT an option on baseboards, as many are wall cavity types.
220 volt costs less to run than 110 volt models, but this also is not something easily changed at this stage....

NO PROBLEM YET, JUST HAD A GOODMAN AIR CONDITIONER INSTALLED MODEL CKL36-IL AND WAS TOLD IT HAD EXCELLENT EFFICIENCY TO FIND OUT THAT ITS A 10 SEER EFFICIENCY RATING WHICH I UNDERSTAND IS THE LEAST...

10 seer was the most efficient for the older generation units and in 1992, it was required that any unit has to have 10 seer or greater. The least efficient seer rating you will find on any new unit will be 13 seer which is a lot better than 10 seer and will save you almost 30% in energy cost. As of lately, they have made units available that are up to 20 seer or more, but they are pricey. I know you said you just had the unit installed, but from the model number, I'm assuming it is an older unit? If new, then it would have at least a 13 seer rating. Hope this answers your questions!

What's the amperage on my Hotpoint Freezer? I want to calculate how much this unit is costing me in energy. Model number FV15CRB, serial number(?) AV 336553. Thanks!

Hi, to find out the total amperage of your unit, you should have a data plate most of the time, located inside with the compressor amperage, and both fan motor amps. If not inside, it will be outside of the unit. It will tell you the RLA and the FLA of each. It will also show the freon type and amount you use. Also, on top of your compressor is a plate that has the RLAmps on it also. This is what you need to find on this unit to help you on your calculations.

Low oil pressure

If the engine is not making any noise. It is probably the oil sending unit that is defective. If you want to be sure you will have to install a pressure gauge and check the pressure when the vehicle is at normal operating temperature. If it is above 10 psi then replace the sending unit.It is located on the back of the motor on the block by the left cylinder head. You might need a special socket for it.Hope this helps.Good luck.
