Hello and welcome to FixYa.
are your controllers batteries dead? connect it with the cable and let it charge for a hour.
after that turn off the console, then power it off from the back for a minute, turn it back on, the controller should work since your using a cable, if not, remove the cable and reconnect it with the console.
Once you can use your controller again, you can perform a format of the drive, it will take around 3 to 4 hours or possibly more, if it takes much longer than that, the hard drive is most likely faulty.
if you get stuck at any point or if you require further instructions let me know.
hold down the playstation button on the controller. if that doesn't help use a to press the small reset button on the back of the controller and then plug it in to the console with the cable, or try reconnecting with the ps. button
use a peper clip or similar to press the reset button ***
If that does not do the trick then follow this: There is a reset button on the back of the controller, above the top right hand corner of the square with all on the information and barcode. Press it with a sharp tipped object while still connected to the PS3 via USB cable. Then press the PS button and you should be back on wirelessly.

Your HARD DRIVE (aka: Hard Disk),
located on the left side of the unit, has crashed. You will need to
replace the HD.
When you replace your hard drive, you
will need to have the latest firmware on a
usb stick. Download the firmware from
the playstation official website onto a usb
stick. Once prompted by your system you
will need to insert the usb stick into the
PS3. Good luck..
You will need 2.5" Sata Hard Drive.
