Question about Dell Computers & Internet

1 Answer

The Pioneer DVD+-RW DR-K17Y ATA Device in my Dell Inspiron E1705 has stopped working. The drawer won't open (without the help of an unbent paper clip) and the disc does not spin up. Application software requiring a CD (or DVD) in the drive think the drive is empty whether is is or not. There are no error messages appearing or any other indication that anything is wrong. After cleaning the registry and the files of unnecessary clutter (Uniblue software) and updating drivers yesterday it began to work but stopped again this morning. I have since repeated yesterday's procedures plus uninstalled and reinstalled the DVD driver. Nothing seems to work. I have also run several diagnostic tests and all say that the drive and its drivers are working fine. But they are not. Thanks for your help, Mark B

Thanks for your response and help. While struggling to get to the BIO pages (the instructions flashed by on the screen so fast I didn't have time to either read or activate them) the drive began to work again. But it didn't last. After following your instructions, short of ordering a new drive, and finding no problems, I downloaded and installed a new driver. That seems to have worked. However, I would like to keep our dialog open for a few more days in case it fails again. I think the problem is digital rather than physical and wonder if there may be other things to explore. -Mark

Hello

Lets start by checking if the drive is detected by bios. turn off the computer and enter setup / bios / cmos when asked.

one of the bios pages should show you the hard drive, and the cdrom drive that is connected to the computer, if it does not show up there, either the drive is bad or the motherboard of your laptop is no longer functioning on that part.

If it does show up there but the tray will not open and a disk wont spin, - you can't start up from a cd even if you set the boot up order to start from Cd and then put in a restore cd or similar windows insallation disk, if that does not start up. then the drive is faulty. And the fix, most likely to replace the drive.

instructions on how to remove and replace the drive on your dell are documented here

http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/ins9400/en/sm/opdrive.htm#wp999869

before replacing the drive you can try removing it from the laptop, start up without the drive, then turn off the machine, reinstall the drive and boot up again. Remember to unplug and remove the battery when installing or adding parts.

you can get a pretty good deal on any computer parts from http://www.newegg.com/ , you can also try www.ebay.com

Make sure the type of the new drive is simline / fits into a laptop, and that the connector / interface is the same.

My burner will not burn cd's anymore. It still plays cd's fine as well as play and burn dvd's fine. I see no errors in hardware setup. It is a nec dvd +- RW ND 6650A that came with my Dell Inspiron E1705.

The CD Burner / Player / DVD Burner are all different heads. If the Dell Inspiron E1705 is an older model it is most likely you have reached the end of it's usable life for the CD burner part. If it is new the CD burner is most likely defective and hopefully warrantied. Otherwise these CD/DVD units can be replaced relatively inexpensively (as compared to buying a new laptop).

This sounds as a hardware problem, maybe a gear or a servo engine. Its a common problem since the mechanism is small and mostly plastic. If you have the chance use a live cd or live usb to see if it is not a windows problem. In my opinion the best solution is to replace the drive.
