Question about Dell Computers & Internet
Lets start by checking if the drive is detected by bios. turn off the computer and enter setup / bios / cmos when asked.
one of the bios pages should show you the hard drive, and the cdrom drive that is connected to the computer, if it does not show up there, either the drive is bad or the motherboard of your laptop is no longer functioning on that part.
If it does show up there but the tray will not open and a disk wont spin, - you can't start up from a cd even if you set the boot up order to start from Cd and then put in a restore cd or similar windows insallation disk, if that does not start up. then the drive is faulty. And the fix, most likely to replace the drive.
instructions on how to remove and replace the drive on your dell are documented here
before replacing the drive you can try removing it from the laptop, start up without the drive, then turn off the machine, reinstall the drive and boot up again. Remember to unplug and remove the battery when installing or adding parts.
you can get a pretty good deal on any computer parts from http://www.newegg.com/ , you can also try www.ebay.com
Make sure the type of the new drive is simline / fits into a laptop, and that the connector / interface is the same.
