During wash cycle it is only spinning one way

I hope you are referring to the agitator.
On washing machines, the drum only spins one way.
The agitator in the middle of the drum will spin both ways.
If your agitator only spins one way, something is broken.
Please share the year (?), make and model of the machine.
God bless your efforts.

My ge wpsf4170 top load washer agitator spins but the drum itself stays stationary.

If the drum spins but the agitator doesn't agitate then its the dog(lil arm things) that grab the agitator ridges to work. If the drum doesn't spin at all its the belt under the drum. it's either broke the belt or has worn and slipped off or the drum was way off balance and kicked it off(belt) . way cheaper to fix either than buy new and most new ones have no agitator anymore so how does it clean better? In my opinion, they don't so I get the parts online at repair clinic and do it my self. Sorry Maytag Repair man. But I saved a lot

While in spin cycle agitator spins, but tub does not

Hello, it is the drum shaft collar or what the tub rests on. It is on the top of the shaft. You need to remove the shell, the plastic collar that rests on top of the drum, the agitator, then the nut that holds the drum down, and then pull the drum out, and then you will see the collar. I know it is hard to get to so I would call a pro for this job unless you think you can do it. The part is cheep it is the labor that will cost you. Thank you

Spin cycle with agitation motion occurring simultaneously

Hi again,

Appreciate the "Ask Me".

I believe the dampness is due to slow spin speed as you also have concluded. And I suspect that partial winding of the motor is the culprit. Hence, replacement is in order.

As to your concern why the agitator also operate during the spin setting, it could possibly be stuck or locked agitator dogs. Agitator dogs function is better explained here by another FixYa member, jsrock516.

Cheers.

Washer will not agitate, took belts off and it will only spin one way.

Only one direction seems fine. On some machines there is a solinoid connected to a lever that either disengages or engages the drum brake to keep the drum from rotating during agitation. Some units reverse the motor direction when agitating and spinning. (one direction for spin the opposite for agitation. Most generally when the motor works in only one direction, say it spins fine but not agitating the culpret is the control dial. There are several combinations of electrical connections that must all make to go from one cycle to the next. On some other models there is a plastic cog that is moved by the solinoid to make the change. Without other info such as make and model, I can't really be sure how to tell you to diagnose the problem..The main thing is one direction is probably right on the turn question.
