I have a Toshiba Desktop Ext Hard Drive HDWC120XK3J1 for many years and worked fine, but now non of my computer recognize it anymore. I hear that is working but doesn.t show up in the My Computer or Disk...

Areas to check
1. Is the light blinking or stationary.( it has to be blinking for it to connect to your pc)

2. Just see if you can get a different cable and plug the hard disk to your PC.

3. Try adjusting the side of the wire close to the hard disk port area slowly. This can happen because the port area has probably worn out over the years and has got some loss in contact.

4. If none of the other steps worked then you hard disk has "probably" become faulty with bad sectors accumulated over the years. ( this happens to all hard disk ). But don't worry you can still recover if you give ur HD to technicians at a cost and it's time to get a new hard disk.

How to recover data from a bad HDD

If a hard drive clicks and the information starts to move through them very slowly when it opens is stored, you need to store data as soon as possible. It's just a matter of time before the hard disk stops working completely. You can try everything from the freezer to remove the device, because the drives read better in colder temperatures.

1. Place the hard disk in a zip lock bag and freeze the zipper to close.

2. The bag containing the hard drive in the freezer. Cool in the freezer for several hours.

3. Remove the bag from the freezer. Remove the hard disk of the bag.

4. Connect the hard drive of your computer, connect the two pin connectors in the slots of the rear disc.

5. Click on the blue circle in the lower left corner of the screen. Click My Computer. Double-click the hard drive appears.

6. Click and drag the files from your hard disk to another disk or desktop.
My 160 gb memorex seems not to be working its detecting the hard disk but the light(green)doesnt seem to be on....and the disk inside is not turning.its showing on the compute that driver has some problem...

Hi,
There seems to be an issue with the external hard drive itself. I recommend you to directly connect the drive with the motherboard and set the drive as the secondary drive in the BIOS without the case of the drive if you can remove and do a clean format to the drive if its detected . If the drive is not detecting, please contact the manufacturer if the drive is eligible for the hardware warranty .

When I connect it to my laptop (or ANY other computer/laptop) the blue light on the external hardrive turns on and I can feel that it is working, but it simply doesnt get read, the computers dont recognise...

Open the enclosure.
Separate the disk-drive from the USB-to-disk-drive adapter.
Connect the disk-drive as a 'slave' disk-drive in a desktop computer, and see if you can read the files.

If not, search online for a professional 'data recovery service' -- for a FEE, they can repair a disk-drive just long-enough to copy your files onto a new disk-drive.

My laptop no longer recognizes my external hard drive. Device Manager gives me an error code 10.

Connect the Maxtor to a different computer, to see if the device works in some other computer.

If the warranty is still valid, exercise the warranty to get a replacement.

If the warranty has expired, disassemble the casing, and disconnect the USB-to-disk-drive interface from the disk-drive.

Connect the disk-drive as a "slave" disk-drive in some other computer, to see if the USB-to-disk-drive interface is the part that failed.

If all else fails, search online for commercial "data recovery services" -- for a large amount of money, they will disassemble the disk-drive, repair it, just long-enough to copy your files.

Doesnt register and all the lights stay

Does it work after you change the USB cable?
If so, then your USB cable is the problem.

Does it work on some "other" computer?
If so, then your computer is the problem.

Does it work it _any_ USB port in your computer?

Failing that, disassemble the casing, to find:
* the USB-to-disk-drive adapter,
* the disk-drive itself.

Connect the disk-drive as a "slave" drive to a desktop computer, to see if the disk-drive can be detected.
If not, then the disk-drive has "died".
Buy a new disk-drive, and connect it to that USB-to-disk-drive adapter, to "revive" your external unit.

Read the serial-number from the disk-drive, and access Western Digital's web-site, and enter the number in the "check warranty" section, to see if your unit is still under warranty, i.e., a free replacement.

If not under warranty, then W.D. has a "Customer Loyalty Program" -- buy a new External Hard-Drive from their web-site, and they will give you about a 20% discount from their "retail" price.

The computer no longer sees my 320 gb hard drive, do i need to download new drivers? if ao where do i find them. i store all my photo's and music on this hard drive

Possibilities:
1. dead USB port on your computer -- try another port
2. try a different USB cable
3. try your external drive on some other computer, to see if it works at all
4. open the casing, and separate the disk-drive from the USB-to-disk-drive adapter. Connect the disk-drive as a "slave" disk-drive, thus bypassing that adapter, to see if the adapter has failed, or if the disk-drive itself has failed
5. Google-search for a commercial "data recovery service" -- such companies can disassemble your disk-drive, and fix it, just long-enough to copy all your photos/music onto a brand-new disk-drive.

I have a LaCie Hard Disk 1TB. But I am afraid, that it is destroyed. I cant get in contact with it, and it makes trouble in my PC. The PC works very slowly until I take the harddisk off line. Whats wrong?...

It does sound like you are having some hardware issues. It may be that the circuit board for the drive is failing and not the drive itself. Turn the drive off and try contacting LaCie customer service and see if they will replace the unit for you.

Disk boot failure, insert system disk and press enter

The drive should be set with jumpers or cable select to be primary master. Some pc & drive combinations don't like cable select, others insist on it. Try both, one at a time.
