Yes, the ignition switch or ignition wires on the Run side of the switch may be bad. Most people don't know that the Start side of the switch can power the spark plugs. But when you stop cranking and let the key go to Run you can lose the spark to the plugs

There is also a safety feature in the OMC system. The micro switches on the linkage have to be adjusted or timed. This is so the throttle is not set too high to engage the outdrive. So it does a lockout of the module or a lockout of the starter.

A second feature prevents starting if the outdrive is up too high. This prevents breaking Ujoints and dangerous planing conditions from an improperly trimmed outdrive. Lower the outdrive.

You will see the microswitches, see if the linkage can be moved to line up the contacts. They are simply contact switches and you may have to temporarily disconnect some linkage to test start.

Can't get engine to turn over when.i turn key

Hi Donald. I would need more spacifiics in order to narrow your troubleshooting, however, if you get no power, then start by charging the battery. omce charged, try to start it again. If it turns over, remove your pos(red) battery cable from the terminal. If your car dies, then it's the alternator. If you still can't start it, however, it is getting power, then check to make sure you have gas in the car. If you do, does it smell like it's been flooded? (Heavy gas odor in the air), If not, after several pumps and no start, check your fuel....lines, filters, pumps,(the fuel pump can be heard when you turn your ke to on, by listening for the motor to wirrr, in the gas tank, by just simply removing the gas cap, and placing your ear, near the hole.

I have a 50 hp 1975 Johnson outboard. When I turn

There is a switch in the control box that locks out the start unless you are in neutral. Open the box and put in a new switch, this is a safty device to keep it from starting in forward and throwing you out of the boat. Jim OMC retired Mech

the vro or oil injection is bad those old omc engines are notorious for that happening when the sit for a few weeks or a few months you can order a new unit but there not cheap and it will just happen again best thing to do is disconnect the unit and mix oil and gas 50;1
