Telescope: can't see anything except shadows

This telescope is old and has never been used (stored in original case/box) When I look thru it I can't see anything- I can see a shadow if I cross my hand over and block the light. I can't make out anything either close or far away. I've turned it some but to no avail. Not sure what to do or if it doesn't work???

Put the eyepiece with the LARGEST number written on it into the telescope and take it outside during the day time and practice focusing on a distant object. DO NOT use the 2x barlow if you have one.

You never said what type of telescope? Is this a REFLECTOR with a mirror inside? or is it a REFRACTOR which has a lens mounted on the front.

Yes you can see the 5 bright planets WITHOUT a telescope. However remember that it is only a 60mm lens-- a standard pair of binoculars is 50mm. The scope will give you about 100 power magnification maximum.

All astronomical telescopes show upside down images --- it's normal.

Stars are always points of light no matter what telescope you own. Download this star chart:

Objects in the sky are tiny, smaller than the tip of your finger held at arm's length, try for the moon FIRST which is large. Then try Jupiter which is that very bright "star" to the Southeast after dark.

Where do I get a book or papers on how to use the Orbitor 4500 that was given to me second hand?

You probably will not be able to find a manual. However Meade maintains a web site with all of their telescopes.

Look under either REFRACTOR or REFLECTOR for one similar to your telescope. They all assemble in a similar fashion and the Meade manuals have a section on how to use the telescope.\

Can not see thru telescope.

Yes it will focus --- put the eyepiece with the LARGEST number written on it into the scope. DO NOT use the 2x or 3x barlow.

Practice focusing on a distant object at least 100 yards away during the day. The moon should be your first night time target.

How to use telescope at night?

Many people have the same problem-- with these small telescopes you are stuck with seeing only the moon, and several other planets, and maybe a few bright star clusters.

These are all TINY objects (except for the moon).... when you look through the telescope you are looking at a section of sky about the size of your fingertip held at arms length-- the scope must be pointed DIRECTLY at the object. Practice on the moon first-- and then try to find Saturn which is up in the sky right now-- it looks like a dim (slightly yellow) star.

Cant see anything

Well you -- like hundreds of other people-- bought a department store telescope. Put the lowest power eyepiece in the telescope-- it's the one with the LARGEST number written on it.

Practice focusing during the day time on a distant object. I know the box said 500 power BUT you will only get about 100 power or less maximum that you can actually use.

Just got a 78-8831 and set it up according to instructions. After inserting lens into eyepiece, I can't see anything at all. Dont worry, I've removed the front cap from the the main telescope.

Something leads to believe I'm either missing something real fundamental or my telescope is broken. Please help
