Question about Philips Televison & Video
I have a Philips DVD player DVP5982 HDMI 1080p DivX and it will not read any discs. Any suggestions?
I am sorry to hear you are having problems with your dvd player, but hopefully we can get it back up and working for you again. There are some common problems that players may experience as time goes on and will give you error messages like "no disc", "wrong disc", "unable to read disc", etc. The good news is that most of them are not expensive to fix. I will list them in the order in which they usually occur.
1. The discs become scratched or dirty- Since the optical assembly uses a laser to read the discs as they spin any scratch or dirt (commonly finger prints) will cause the device to no read them properly. If you hold the disc up to the light and tilt it back and forth you will be able to see any defects. This does not sound like your problem because it is happening with every disc you place in your player, but the information may be helpful to you in the future. You can purchase a disc cleaning kit at just about any store that sells electronics such as Wal-Mart, Best Buy, Circuit City, Radio Shack, etc. You can purchase an electric one (cost a bit more) or a manual one in which you turn a knob (cheapest). They are not expensive and will help keep your discs in good working order. You could possibly take them to a local video or gaming store and in some cases they will clean one or two for you for free, but they may charge a small fee for any more than that. You can call any of these stores in your area and see what they can do for you. You can also clean the discs manually, but this will not remove scratches (click the link for step by step instructions from my tips and tricks).
2. The Optical Reading lens is dirty- This sounds more along the lines of what could be causing your problem. You can also purchase a cleaning kit at the same stores I mentioned previously or you can clean the lens manually (you can click the link to my tips and tricks for more detailed information on how to do this). The following are example pictures to give you a better idea of what to look for:
Example picture of the optical lens:
3. The spindle motor is malfunctioning- The spindle motor is what spins the discs so that the laser can read the data. If the disc is not spinning at all, it is a sign that the part is not working properly. You can determine this by a visual inspection (remove the case top and see if the disc is spinning or by listening really close when you insert the disc into the machine). In the following link, I go over in more details about the common mechanical failures in these types of devices.
4. The laser assembly has malfunctioned- This problem is a bit more expensive to repair if it turns out to be the cause. If the laser is not firing properly, it will not be able to read the disc data. I also discuss this in the common mechanical failure tip and plus there are some other failures that I go over and provide pictures of.
Please remember to always take great caution when working inside electronic equipment because of SHOCK hazards. Even if a device is unplugged it can still deliver a shock from the capacitors because they can hold an electrical charge for some time even after the device is unplugged. Take caution as well when dealing with any type of LASER because they can cause eye damage and in some cases severe burns.
If you find that the problem is more in depth like having to replace a spindle motor or laser assembly, I suggest you to take the device to a qualified technician for repair unless you feel 100% comfortable doing it yourself or have training because of personal injury or causing further damage to the device.
I think that if you clean the optical lens first it will more than likely solve the problem, but I wanted to mention the other ones and provide you with as much information as possible to help you solve the issue. I sincerely hope that the information I provided helps you solve the problem and save you some money. Please let me know if you need further assistance or have any other questions. I wish you the very best and hope you have a good weekend.
If you would not mind, please rate my help. I would greatly appreciate it. Thank You
