Question about Cowon System iAUDIO X5 MP3 Player
Unfortunately, reprogramming - updating the firmware, is the deepest that you can go, software side.
So this is definitely a hardware issue, is the button broken or getting stuck? you would have to open the player and take a look - only if your outside of warranty.
If you are in warranty get it warranty repaired.

All you need is a set of small screwdrivers, your fingernails or a plastic stick.
find all the screws and remove, them, check under any labels or soft objects.
then the last thing to do is to use your fingernails or a plastic stick to go around the casing to get it pop off, it is most likely held in place with plastic clips.
now even if you do get it apart, I can't guarantee that we can fix this, you can look at the buttons and see if its getting stuck. But it might be very much more complex than that.

If you formatted the memory and reinstalled the firmware this is all you could do in this matter ..This means that it is a issue of hardware ..infact it is probably just the contact for the up and down button ...orsomething like that or related...Im sorry to give you these news but in what concern software this is all...probably you can try to flash it and reinstall the firmware again and not just a update ...look for the original one ...and try to reinstall it ...but ,,,I give it a 50 % chance to be from it ..
When I started to read..my first thought was the blocked button ...or ..function of the button ..

I suggest taking it back to the purchase place (with receipt, and still under warranty) and exchange it. It almost sounds like there is a defect in the unit itself (not the software).
I am positive they can run a diagnostics on it as well, if applicable or available, however if you are still within your time limit of warranty I would highly suggest replacing it.
