Disconnect your network cable and printer's hard drive and then power on. Its possible there is a stuck job somewhere.

If that doesn't work, believe or not it could be the fuser.

1.Make sure the guides on the back of the tray is set properly as well and the pages have not slid back further then they should. Say if you are using letter. Make sure the tray guide are exactly on letter.

2.Often the paper pick up roller gets paper dust on it, and it gets slippery.
Only clean it with a relatively lint free, cotton cloth, dampened with plain water. Any other cleaners can dry out the rubber, and shorten the life on the roller.

3. If you notice the blue pickup roller on the bottom of the tray is getting worn it needs to be replaced. Some times you can get a few thousand more pages out of it by swapping it with the other one that is up in the printer. If find it wears more slowly.
You can remove them by pressing on the release tab sticking out the front of the roller. Take out the tray and you will see another one up in the top where the tray came out.

SOURCE: default paper tray selection for HP LaserJet 4200tn

1) When the printer receives a print job, it selects the tray by trying to match the requested paper type and size with what has been loaded in the trays. Using an “autoselect” process, it searches all available trays for the paper that satisfies the request, starting with the bottom tray and ending with the top tray (tray 1). The printer begins printing the job as soon as it finds the proper type/size.

2) If paper is loaded in tray 1 and tray 1 is set "TRAY 1 TYPE=ANY" and "TRAY 1 SIZE=ANY" on the
Paper Handling menu, the printer will always pull paper from tray 1 first.

Typical of this machine. You have worn out feed rollers in tray 2. There are three of them, two in the top of the machine after removing the tray and one in the tray itself

Blotchy printing output for HP 8550

This is often caused by the TRANSFER DRUM having deteriorated and become 'bumpy, or 'dimpled' - take you pick depending on how YOURS looks. This causes incomplete contact with the Photo-conductor drum, and as a result doesn't lift all the image off it.

The only solution is to fit a replacement TRANSFER KIT.

I have also seen NEW 'old stock' transfer drums, straight out of the box like this, so its obviously an 'aging problem' with that component.

Also seen it in a very low count printer that was in storage, unused for over 3 years.

My suspiction is there is a tab on the tray that triggers a switch telling the printer what type of tray has been inserted. Your old tray is likely different from the Plus 4 tray and the printer knows it.

What is the replacement printer for HP Laser Jet

This document provides information about replacing the print cartridge for the HP LaserJet 1010 printer series, including life expectancy and replacement instructions. Print cartridge life expectancy The life of the print cartridge depends on the amount of toner that your print jobs require. When printing text on letter/A4-size paper at five percent coverage, the print cartridge lasts an average of 2,000 pages. This assumes that you set the print density to three and disable EconoMode. (These are the default settings.) See Ordering supplies for information on ordering replacement print cartridges. Changing the print cartridge Follow the below instructions to change the print cartridge:
  1. Open the print cartridge door, and remove the old print cartridge. See the recycling information inside the print cartridge box. Figure 1: Removing old print cartridge c00028312.gif CAUTION: To prevent damage, do not expose the print cartridge to light. Cover it with a piece of paper.
  2. Remove the new print cartridge from the packaging, and gently shake it from side to side to distribute the toner evenly inside the cartridge. Figure 2: Gently shaking new print cartridge c00028313.gif
  3. Pull the tab until all the tape is removed from the print cartridge. Put the tab in the print cartridge box to return for recycling. Figure 3: Removing tape from print cartridge c00035442.gif
  4. Insert the print cartridge in the printer, making sure that the print cartridge is in position. Close the print cartridge door. Figure 4: Inserting new print cartridge c00028315.gif
