I use Windows XP (DELL PC) and recently a Microsoft update screwed up the time on my computer. I keep getting a message that "RPC is not available/cannot be accessed." I am trying to download Identity Guard and it will not download because time on computer is not correct. What to do?

Hello.
You need to do a System Restore. Below are the steps to do this:
1) Click on "Start"
2) Go to "All programs"
3) Go to "Accesories"
4) Go to "System Tools"
5) Click on "System Restore"
6) On the new window that appears click on the "Restore my computer to an earlier time", then on "Next"
7) Using the calendar, click on any bolded date that is earlier than the Update, then click on "Next"
8) Click on "Next" again
This will solve your problem.

Hi! First, adjust the time of the computer by double clicking it. It should display the time and you'll have the option to adjust even the date. It should correct it and you'll be good to get on your download once the time is corrected. HOpe this helps and have a good one!

I have a Hyundai computer with a Microsoft windows XP 2005. It reads off line & I'am unable to install my AVG pc cleaner

Your operating system Win XP is too far out of date. You have Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8 and Windows 10, between you and the present day. All support for XP finished 3 years ago.

After April 8, 2014, Microsoft will no longer provide security updates or technical support for Windows XP. Security updates patch vulnerabilities that may be exploited by malware and help keep users and their data safer.

You need to update to Win 7 at least, but really, you need a new computer and Windows 10. Your computer hardware is due to fail at any time soon. If you get 10 years, you are really lucky.

Rpc server is unavailable

This problem occurs because of a mismatch in the computer name and the name that the RPC service expects. This mismatch may occur if the computer name is changed by using one of the following methods:
  • The Microsoft System Preparation (Sysprep) tool was used to create the Windows XP image that you used to start the computer.
  • You change the computer name during the Windows XP Out of Box Experience.
  • One or more of the following conditions are true:
    • You disconnect the network cable during the Windows XP Out of Box Experience.
    • You do not restart the computer after the Windows XP Out of Box Experience has completed.
    • You open Disk Management.
To work around this problem, restart the computer at least one time after the Windows XP Out of Box Experience has completed, and before you open Disk Management
Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.Microsoft is researching this problem and will post more information in this article when the information becomes available.

Cannot use WinXP System File Checker (SFC), RPC Server?

Are you trying this in safe mode?
Sometimes the RPC service will refuse to start. Assuming all other services are reset to their default values:

Start, run, CMD

net start (check the service again to be sure it is stopped)

net start rpcss
net start (check again)

if no joy, you need to use the XP CD to go to the Recovery Console.

From the Recovery Console type:

enable RpcSs SYSTEM_AUTO_START

reboot the machine.

Some general things to try.

See if System Restore will get you back to a restore point before your problem with Explorer.

Try Safe Mode (Do you have this problem in Safe Mode?).

Try running ChkDsk to check your drive for errors. Right-click your Drive icon/ Properties/ Tools/ Error Checking. Select both boxes.

Run the System File Checker program from the Run Box by typing.....Sfc /Scannow in it and have your XP CD handy.

If they don't work you could try repairing windows by running it over itself. You will lose all your windows updates but your files will be untouched.

Dear SherriJ:

Some time you might get this issues with the updates if they doesn't install properly or the computer turns off while instaiing updates.

However you can select last known good configuration of restore you computer to earlier time.

I would recommend you to keep the automatic updates on that will help you keep your computer in a good state.

Microsoft updates

Most of the time when updates cannot be installed, is because you have installed a file that is newer than the one provided by Microsoft, or you already have the "update" and Microsoft gives you the error.

Essentially when your computer communicates with the Windows Update website. It uses TWO technologies called:
Active X - to interact with the Microsoft site. The first time you visit the Update website, using your profile, you are asked if you will accept the Windows Update Control Package (the Active X control) onto your machine.
SSL (Secure Socket Layer) - A method of data encryption used by Internet Explorer.
Now this general error message 0x800A138F, that some folks get when they visit Windows Update, has been around for a while. BUT, when the MSBlast virus was unleashed Microsoft changed a few things at the main update website. One of them was to use Akamai for additional bandwidth and this connectivity is exclusively using HTTPS (SSL) for the downloading of the update catalogue. It is since then that we have seen an escalation in the number of 0x800A138F error messages!
The following steps will help many of you... BUT
What would be REALLY helpful to anyone trying to support you, is if you go to the "Windows Update Log" and look for any "Errors". This gives a clearer indication as to the exact nature of the problem. (The 0x800A138F error message is a "General" error THE real error number is in the log. A list of possible error messages is in a table at the bottom of this page.)
The windows update log is in the following places:
C:\Windows\Windows Update.log (Win XP & Win98/Me)
C:\WINNT\Windows Update.log (Windows 2000)
Just copy and paste the above in Windows Explorer to open the log file...
