Question about Dell Dimension B110 PC Desktop

Bought internal harddrive and don't know where 7-pin SATA port is on motherboard, or Sata power connector is from PC.

Hi, sorry to tell you this but that model of dell desktop does not have sata ports or sata power connectors and has no spare drive bays to mount the hard drive either , you would be best to try and return the drive and purchase an external hard drive and connect it to your PC via the usb socket .

Connections to the hard drive


The Harddrive is a SATA unit.

Uses a SATA data cable, and a SATA power cable.

SATA data cable, and connector on motherboard, example;

Between the SATA data cable connector, and the SATA power cable connector; the SATA data cable connector is the shorter of the two in width.
SATA data cable connector has 7-pins.
SATA power cable connector has 15-pins.

The connector end used on the harddrive side, and optical drive side, (CD/DVD drive), is usually a 90 degree Bent Elbow.
The connector end that plugs into the motherboard, is a Straight connector.

NOTE* Color of connectors does NOT matter.
Most of the time the SATA data connectors on the motherboard, are different colors.

This is to help discern what number of SATA data connector it is.
Four SATA data connectors on the motherboard?

SATA 1, SATA 2, SATA 3, and SATA 4;
Or:
SATA 0, SATA 1, SATA 2, and SATA 3?

SATA 0, or SATA 1, is usually reserved for the Harddrive.
The Primary harddrive with the Operating System on it.
(Unless you have harddrives set in a RAID configuration)

DOES NOT MATTER WHAT SATA DATA CONNECTOR, you plug into, on the motherboard.

Want to plug the harddrive into SATA 3, or SATA 4?
Go ahead.
NO matter what SATA connector on the motherboard that you plug into, BIOS will find the harddrive.

Note the L-shape in the connector.
Has to line up on the L-shape on the harddrive, optical drive, or motherboard, SATA data connector.

There is usually a lock on the connector. This you may not see.
Sometimes there is a little 'bump' on the connector. Depress with the thumbnail to install the cable, or remove.

A) 24-pin ATX main power cable:

In the photo, look to the right of the Blue ram memory slots.

The Yellowish/Whitish connector to the right of them, with two columns of 12 socket holes, is where the 24-pin ATX main power cable plugs in.

In the Motherboard Layout it is marked by - ATX1

This is a general example of a 24-pin ATX main power cable, and it's respective connector on the motherboard,

Note the middle photo, and the Lock on the side of the power cable's connector. The Lock has a hooked end that goes over a Tab, on the motherboard's connector.

The Lock works like a see-saw on a playground. The top is squeezed in, and this brings the hooked end away from the Tab, in order to remove the power cable.
When assured that the power cable is plugged in tightly, and therefore correctly, the hooked end of the Lock will be over the motherboard connector's Tab.

B) 4-pin ATX +12 Volt power cable:

In the center of the motherboard, under the Processor socket, is the Northbridge chip. (Part of the motherboard chipset)
It is under a finned aluminum Heatsink, that resembles a meat tenderizer's head.

Draw an imaginary line up above it, in-between the Processor socket, and the aluminum finned Heatsink, and go straight LEFT.
See the whitish 4-socket hole square connector?

This is where the 4-pin ATX +12 Volt power cable plugs in. It is power for the Processor. Has the same locking setup as the 24-pin ATX main power cable, and it's motherboard connector.

The Acer Aspire E500 Desktop PC uses an Acer MBP2207024 motherboard,

I'll be referring back to the photos of the motherboard, at the bottom of the page of the above link.

Start with the power cables coming from the Power Supply, to the motherboard.

1) 24-pin ATX main power cable, and corresponding connector on motherboard:

Middle and bottom photo. Look at the top left side. There is a whitish long connector, with 24 socket holes in it, on the motherboard.

Here is an average example of the power cable, and the connector on the motherboard,

2) 4-pin ATX +12 Volt power cable:

It's hard to see in the photos. Go to the bottom photo.
From the left side; look at the purple Keyboard port, and green Mouse port.
Go to the right to the blue VGA port. (15 socket holes. 3 rows of 5)

Now go to the stack of 3 ports to the right of the blue VGA port.
Two USB, then a Firewire port on top. Right behind this stack, is the square 4-socket hole, whitish 4-pin ATX +12 Volt connector.

Note that on the male power cable connector, for the 24-pin power cable, and the 4-pin power cable, there is a Lock.

This Lock acts like a see-saw on a playground. The top is squeezed in, and this action releases the hook at the bottom end, away from the tab on the female motherboard connector.

To ensure that these power cables are plugged in tight, the Lock needs to be in the lock position, over the tab on the female motherboard connector.

This power cable is power for the Processor.

That's it for the motherboard.
There should also be a SATA power cable coming from the Power Supply, to the SATA harddrive.

There are 4 of them.

The beauty of SATA:
Next to the SATA headers on the motherboard will be silkscreened a figure. SATA0, SATA1, SATA2, and SATA3.

Or it may have SATA1, SATA2, SATA3, and SATA4.

A harddrive should plug into SATA0, or SATA1.
HOWEVER, the beauty of SATA, is that you can plug the harddrive into ANY of the four SATA connectors on the motherboard, and BIOS will find it.

The plastic front of your computer is the Front Panel.

The rectangular block of plastic with pins sticking up out of it, on the motherboard, that the wires from the Front Panel go to, is the Front Panel header.

Sometimes abbreviated as F_PANEL, or FP1, or PANEL_1.

Looking at the Top motherboard photo, it is the blue rectangular connector, at the Bottom corner.
In the Bottom motherboard photo, it is all the way to the Bottom/Right corner.

The CPU Fan, (Central Processing Unit, or also known as Microprocessor, or Processor for short), cable connects to the small 3-pin whitish connector, that is towards the top of the motherboard, and above the 24-pin ATX main power cable connector.

The System Fan, (SYS_FAN), or computer case fan, connects to the small 3-pin connector to the Right, of the 4-pin ATX +12 Volt connector, on the motherboard.

Cannot find the sata plug on motherboard

The beauty of SATA technology;

IF, there is more than one SATA connector (Header) on the motherboard, the harddrive can be plugged into ANY one of them.

For example if there are 4 SATA headers on the motherboard;
They can be labeled SATA 1, SATA 2, SATA 3, and SATA 4,
OR,
SATA 0, SATA 1, SATA 2, and SATA 3.

The harddrive usually plugs into SATA 0, or SATA 1.

With the SATA technology however, you can plug into ANY of them, and BIOS will find the device. (In this case a harddrive)

For the HP Compaq Business Desktop D330 computer, the motherboard is an Asus A8SN-CF (HP/Compaq name = Phoenix),

All I see is one SATA header (Connector) on the motherboard. It is at the top right area, and is Black in color.

Look at the Top, and third connector over from the Right side.
You can barely make out - SATA1.

Motherboard installed in the computer case, the SATA 1 header (Connector) is at the Bottom of the motherboard.

The new harddrive technology you refer to is SATA.

Proper installation of tower wires


According to Gateway Support, the Gateway 505GR desktop computer uses an Intel (Ausberg) 915G motherboard,

Scroll down to the photo with the sections marked in red.

In the top link, looking at the motherboard with the computer case open, the USB and Firewire (1394a) cables, can be seen attached to the motherboard near the letters D, E, and F.

In F that red cable is a SATA cable. One end attaches to the back of the SATA harddrive, (The angled end), and the other end of the SATA cable attaches to one of those SATA headers on the motherboard.
(SATA header = SATA connector on motherboard)

Preferred SATA header for the Harddrive is SATA 1.
DOESN'T matter though. That's the beauty of SATA. You can plug the SATA data cable into ANY SATA header on the motherboard, and BIOS will find the harddrive.


In the second link, looking at the motherboard photo shown, and comparing it to the view of the motherboard as mounted in the computer case, the Front Panel header is at the very Bottom Right.

Remove the Front Panel, and trace where the wires end.

IF, the wires already installed coming from the motherboard to the Front Panel, are Too short, you should make notes before you remove them from the motherboard.

Note what color pair of twisted wires, went to where, in the Front Panel.
Compare to the chart of the Front Panel header given above.
(IF any wires are still connected to the Front Panel header on the motherboard)

Once the Front Panel is removed, it's usually pretty easy to trace the two wires up to the Power On switch.
Same for the Power On LED light.
Again, same for the HarDDrive activity LED light.

The SATA harddrive requires a DATA cable, and a SATA power cable.

The connector for a Data cable has 7 contact pins. It is the shorter connector.

This is a 4-pin standard Peripheral power cable. Commonly misnomered as a 'Molex' power cable,

IF, the SATA harddrive has a provision for a SATA power cable, AND a 4-pin standard Peripheral power cable, ONLY use just the SATA power cable.

Using both power cables will burn up the harddrive.
May not happen immediately in some cases, but WILL eventually happen.

Not too much way you can go wrong. There's a 20 or 24-pin connector which plugs into the motherboard in only one place. There probably is a 4-pin connector and that, too, goes into the motherboard (in a socket near the CPU). The other connectors are power connectors for you hard drive and CD/DVD. That's about it.

A) The motherboard uses a 24-pin ATX main power cable.
In the illustration the connector on the motherboard is on the right side.
It is an empty rectangular box with ATX Power Connector in it.

On the motherboard photo it is the rectangular white connector with two rows of 10 socket holes, and is to the bottom right of ram memory slot 2.

Ensure that the 24-pin ATX main power cable's connector, is locked into place on the motherboard's connector. The lock tab on the main power cable must be hooked over the tab on the motherboard connector. This ensures that the main power cable is in all the way.

B) The motherboard uses a 4-pin ATX +12 Volt power cable.
The connector on the motherboard is a white square connector, with 4 socket holes.

In the illustration it is to the bottom left corner of the Processor socket (LGA 775), and has ATX12V underneath it. This power cable's connector also has a lock tab.

Power TO the motherboard, that's it.

Power FROM the motherboard:

C) System Fan, and CPU (Processor) Fan.

Abbreviated as SYS_FAN, and CPU_FAN to the bottom left of the ATX12V connector.
(4-pin ATX +12 Volt connector on the motherboard)

The System Fan is the computer case fan.
CPU Fan is the Processor fan.

D) The four SATA headers on the bottom right in the photo, (Blue, Orange, Black, and White), are for the SATA data cables.
They connect to a SATA harddrive, or SATA optical drive. (CD/DVD drive)
(They are an L shaped connector inside, with 7 pins inside)

Power for these SATA devices comes from the Power Supply.
The Power Supply has SATA power cables.

(L shaped connector with 15 pins inside. The longer connector between a SATA data cable, and a SATA power cable )

Did you forget which SATA data cable plugs into where, on the motherboard?
Don't sweat it.

The beauty of SATA is that you can plug the harddrive's SATA data cable into ANY of the SATA headers (Connectors) on the motherboard, and BIOS will find it.
Same with a SATA optical drive, or any SATA device, for that matter.

IF, your SATA harddrive has a place on the back for BOTH, a SATA power cable, and a 4-pin standard Peripheral power cable, ONLY use the SATA power cable.

Using both will eventually burn out the SATA harddrive!

From there the main optical drive, (CD/DVD drive), has to have the audio cable plugged into the audio connector on the motherboard.
(Plus the power cable, and data cable, of course)

In the illustration this is the header down in the very far left corner, and located towards the bottom edge.
It has CD_IN marked underneath it.

In the photo it is the Black rectangular connector in the very far left corner.

If you didn't connect the 4-pin +12 Volt power cable, your Processor isn't getting any power.
No Processor operating, No computer.

No Signal on monitor.
(No video signal)

How to install a second hard drive


pmarrs177 you are quite welcome!

I suppose I better post this as a solution, instead of in a Clarification.

This way when someone looks for this type of information, it will be available in a search hit on the internet.

Your problem and my solution will be on the internet for years to come. (Also easier to read) Congratulations! You'll be known worldwide as one more person, who helped bring the mysteries of SATA to be a little bit less mysterious.

Installing it as a secondary storage Harddrive?

Did your Acer T180 model come with a SATA harddrive already installed?

There are several different models of the Acer T180.
Some examples: AST180-UA380A, AST180-U381A, AST180-UA380B

Some of these came with a PATA harddrive, and some came with a SATA harddrive. (PATA is also referred to as ATA, IDE, and EIDE)

Why the question? Because when Windows is first installed on a computer, you are asked if you wish the SATA drivers to be installed.

The model version of an ACER T180 that came with a SATA harddrive, has these drivers already installed.

If your Acer did come with a SATA harddrive, and you are installing an additional harddrive for more storage, just plug the SATA data cable into ANY available SATA header on the motherboard.

BIOS will find the harddrive. Just one of the nice features about SATA.

You can use ANY SATA header on the motherboard. {Not shouting}
(A connection on a motherboard is a Header. This is what a SATA header on a motherboard looks like, doesn't matter what color it is.

The SATA data cable, usually has a 90 degree elbow on one end. This end connects to the Harddrive. Doesn't always have a 90 degree elbow, but most of the time it does.

The straight end connects to the motherboard. There are 7 pins used in the connector.
The SATA power cable has 15 pins.

NOTE*
IF, you do not have an unused SATA power cable coming out of your Power Supply, see if you have a 4-pin peripheral power cable that is not being used.

(The connector end is referred to as a 4-pin Molex connector. It is whitish in color)

Buy an adapter power cable that connects to the 4-pin Molex connector, and has a 15-pin SATA power cable connector on the other end.
