Reactivating windows xp

I had "zlob dns changer" in my system,that is now sorted but I have 2 days to reactivate windows and when I try to do so it says I have activated it to many times. I'm confused as I only activated it once and Microsoft checked that it was genuine at that point.I really cannot afford to buy another copy of windows Is there a way round this

    thankyou guys for such quick response! This zlob stopped me from restoring, stopped windows from updating, changed a lot of things in the registery (mostly microsoft entries)and it disabled avg and msn messenger I used superantispyware to sort this pesky thing out,unfortunatly my pc is still rather a messbut the fact that I'm being given the message saying I have activated windows to many times is the real worry

Windows Activation usually only kicks in if there has been a major change of hardware or if Windows has been reinstalled, so I am surprised to hear it has popped up after the removal of some malware.

How exactly did you go about removing zlob?

If you can post some more info I'm sure someone can help you.

In the meantime, you might want to try activating over the phone rather than use the automated option. If you speak to someone at Microsoft and explain the situation, they may be able to reset the activation account.

    Two people have suggested you try activating over the phone.

    I see you've rated this advice as 'thanks for trying' (the solution provides some help but does not solve the problem) but don't make any mention in your reply about actually trying it.

    Did you try it? Did Microsoft refuse to activate the software when you spoke to them? If so, what did they say? What reason did they give?

I need to enter a new product key after xp is already installed how can I do this?

I recommend that you run System Restore to create a new restore point before you follow these steps.

First of all you need to decative Windows and reactivate it.
Deactivate Windows loadTOCNode(4, 'moreinformation');
  1. Click Start, and then click Run.
  2. In the Open box, type regedit, and then click OK.
  3. In the navigation pane, locate and then click the following registry key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\WindowsNT\Current Version\WPAEvents
  4. In the topic pane, right-click OOBETimer, and then click Modify.
  5. Change at least one digit of this value to deactivate Windows.
Reactivate Windows and add new product key loadTOCNode(4, 'moreinformation');
  1. Click Start, and then click Run.
  2. In the Open box, type the following command, and then click OK. %systemroot%\system32\oobe\msoobe.exe /a
  3. Click Yes, I want to telephone a customer service representative to activate Windows, and then click Next.
  4. Click Change Product key.
  5. Type the new product key in the New key boxes, and then click Update.

    If you are returned to the previous window, click Remind me later, and then restart the computer.
  6. Repeat steps 1 and 2 to verify that Windows is activated. You receive the following message: Windows is already activated. Click OK to exit.
  7. Click OK.

When you decide to activate your Windows XP, do it by phone rather than online.

If you have a problem entering the codes, you will be directed to a live person who can help you through the process.

Expired windows

do you have a trial version?
if not, you need to register the product key in order to unlock it.

If it is not pirated a call to MS will help you get that sorted out.
