I'm trying to install a Western Digital Serial ATA Hard Drive into the external hard drive enclosure. There are no instructions as to what cables need to be attached and to where

USB external hard drive cases are supplied with SATA and power connectors attached to the circuit board in the case. If you canot connect it to the SATA hard drive then you may have the wrong drive case, your case may be a IDE or SCSI type.

Hard drive crashed need replacement can you give me a part # for a compatible upgrade toshiba satellite m45-s169

Actually you can put just about any size in there. The only thing you need to do is match the connector style. (that takes care of anything else) There are two type SATA and EIDE SATA is the new style and you can get a 500gb drive (and bigger ) EIDE is the older style and has a block looking socket. SATA looks like a tab. On the label on your dead drive you should see a diagram and it should say sata or eide.

Now as long as you get the same connector as your old drive you can get what ever size of drive they have. So this is a good time to spend $10 more and get a 160 or a 320 instead of the 80. The brand does not matter as long as the conenctor and type are correct. I put a 160 in a old A70 I had as there was only a few dollars difference in the prices.

How to install secind sata hard drive

It all depends on how many SATA ports are available on your motherboard.
Older motherboards (EIDE+SATA) usually only had one SATA port. In that case I'd advise purchasing an internal PCI SATA card (around US$ 30).
Modern motherboards (SATA + legacy EIDE) have two, four or even six SATA ports available, and you basically just have to screw the hard disk in an empty slot of the appropriate size (3.5"), and connect the cables. You may have to purchase both data and power SATA cables though. Then, format and install the drive (advice: use the one OS you use more often) from Control Panel > Administrative Tools > My Computer > Disk Management. And you're done.

Removed hard drive from macbook (2.5', hitachi model hts541680l9sa00) and am trying to connect it to my EZQuest Monsoon Slim Firewire/USB 2 Hard Drives (i.e. portable 2.5 alum case) but just cant figure...

Your Hitachi is a SATA hard drive, EZQuest manufactures both a SATA and an EIDE model. Is your model the SATA one, or does it have a large connector with about forty holes on two rows (EIDE)?

If both are SATA, you should be able to see a SATA slot on the hard drive, such as this

http://bixnet.net/images/HDD25SATA-Connector.jpg

and a largish black with two "L" slots in it (possibly, the connector is divided in two "L" connectors) such as this

Hope this helps, have a nice day

Can i add a second disk?

It is up to your computer and what you already have installed, but in almost every situation you will have room for one more device ie: Hard drive or CD/DVD drive. You'll need to open the computer up and check to see if you have wide (about 3") flat grey cables connected to your existing drive or if it is a narrow (about 1/2") with similar size connector on the drive. The wide one is generally EIDE for newer computers and IDE for older. The small is SATA. This is the standard now.

Since you have a drive that is 40GB, you almost certainly are either EIDE or SATA. Once you look at the cables, you'll know which type you need to purchase.

Good luck

I have a 40 pin ide cable connected to my existing hard drive,i have just purchased a diamond max 21 , 250gb hard drive, which cable do i need for this

You can use your existing 40pin EIDE cabele for this drive, however check your motherboard for a SATA connector, as this drive can run EIDE or SATA, naturally the SATA connection is much faster and I would recomend using the SATA connector if your motherboard is compatible.

Hope this helps

Hard drive

According to http://reviews.zdnet.co.uk/hardware/desktops/0,1000000973,10004197,00.htm this tower has Serial ATA, or SATA. Just to confirm, you can easily pop open the case and take a look at the hard-drives. If you see a wide thin ribbon-like cable connecting to your hard-drive then you need an Ultra ATA (or just ATA or IDE) drive. It looks like this:

If a thinner red cable connects to your drive, then that is SATA. It looks like this:
