Question about Belkin F5D8236-4 Router

1 Answer

I have a Belkin N+ router and I am trying to use the USB storage sharing feature. I have a WD HDD mounted in an Ultra external enclosure. When I plug the HDD into the router, the storage LED on the router blinks amber. Any suggestions?

    GRRRRR *turns off frustration mode*

    My F5D8235 is a Version 2 and is running 2.01.08 firmware. It obviously won't accept a download for a Version 1 model.

    When I go tohttp://192.168.2.1/storage_disk.html, It shows "The items on this page are unsupported." Yet there is nothing in the list- "No disks are available".

    Yes. This HDD has always worked flawlessly when attached to the USB port on my PC.

    My external HDD is in NTFS format.

    I COULD copy my entire HDD to my new laptop, reformat the HDD to ANY file system and then copy my files back to the HDD. Any suggestions?

    I am only given 2 options for formatting- NTFS and exFAT. I assume that it is time to buy a new external HDD.

It says the HDD is not compatible with the router.... it might be due to the file system in HDD....
At this moment, the Belkin N+ Router and Modem-Router, F5D8235 and F5D8635 work with the FAT, FAT32, and NTFS file systems only.

Versions of the F5D8235 firmware earlier than 1.01.24 may fail to detect a drive that contains a mix of supported and unsupported file systems. This was fixed in firmware 1.01.24, available from the Belkin UK Support Site

We have seen a few compatibility problems with drives not being recognised and we are investigating these to get them fixed.

We have also seen occasions where a drive was not detected by the router or modem-router due to a poor quality USB cable. If a bus-powered drive does not spin up, the first thing to do is to make sure that a good quality cable is used. Even self-powered drives may fail to be recognised when using poor quality cables. Even though the cable may work when the drive is connected direct to a PC, always try a different (good quality) cable as part of troubleshooting drive detection problems.

Tech Support: If you come across a drive that is not being recognised by the Router or Modem-Router, please check on the hidden page http://192.168.2.1/storage_disk.html if the router has detected anything at all. Make sure that the drive works when connected directly to a Windows computer and try a good quality USB cable as mentioned above.

    plug usb....
    now goto start>run> type \\192.168.2.1 and click ok...
    if you are able to see the device then right click on that drive and select "map network drive"....click finish in the small window.....

I have a 1tbexternal hdd drive and it stopped working. i tryed to switch the plug and put it on other computer but nothing.....

The Passport has four major components:

* the USB cable

* the power-adapter

* the disk-drive inside the enclosure

* the USB-to-disk-drive adapter inside the enclosure.

One of these components has failed.

Try a different USB cable.

Try connecting to a different USB port on your computer.

Try connecting to a USB port on a different computer.

Take a "multi-meter" and measure both the voltage and amperage output from the AC adapter, and compare with the specifications on the label on the adapter.

Open the enclosure, and remove the disk-drive, and then connect it as a "slave" disk-drive in a desktop computer, to see if it works at all.

Purchase a new, compatible, disk-drive, and install it in the enclosure, to "revive" your external storage device.

Get the part-number and serial-number from the label on your disk-drive, and access the W.D. web-site, and use "check warranty status", to see if W.D. will replace the Passport, at minimal cost to you.

Note that W.D. has a "Customer Loyalty" program -- you can buy a new W.D. device, through the W.D. web-site, at a significant discount.

The drive won't mount. has a fast blinking light.

The external storage device has several major components:

* USB cable

* external power-supply

* disk-drive inside the enclosure

* USB-to-disk-drive adapter inside the enclosure.

Try a different USB cable.
Try a different USB port on your computer.
Try a USB port on a different computer.

Take a multi-meter, and measure the output voltage/amperage of the power-supply,
and compare with the specifications on the label of the power-supply.

Open the enclosure, and remove the disk-drive, and attach it as a "slave" drive in a desktop computer, to see if bypassing the USB-to-disk-drive adapter bypasses the problem.

Look at the label on the disk-drive, for manufacturer, product-number, serial-number, and manufacture date. Access the manufacturer's web-site, and use "check warranty status" to see if the warranty still is valid. If so, the drive can be replaced, at minimal cost to you.

Buy a new, compatible, disk-drive, and install it in the enclosure, to "revive" your external storage device.

Search online for a professional "data recovery service". For a significant fee, they can repair your disk-drive, just long-enough to copy your files to a new disk-drive.

Note that W.D. has a "Customer Loyalty" program. Buy a new W.D. disk-drive through the W.D. web-site, at a significant discount.

Connecting WD Passport external HD with Belkin N+ router

I had this same issue. Found it to be a sequencing issue. Plug the USB into the router with the power off to the HDD. Power on the HDD and you should be able to get to it fine. Also make sure you have the latest firmware on the router.

I have recently bought a Belkin N+ Wireless Modem-Router (model F5D8635-4 v1). It comes with the USB port and I bought a WD 1Tb drive to connect with it. I added the WD drive (92.168.2.1My Book in my...

  • First off, the WD hard drive was meant to be connected to a computer.
  • Therefore connect it to the fastest computer you have or the one running the network.
  • Make that drive a network drive.
  • Set the router to handle DHCP using the web based interface (192.168.1.1 on a linksys router, check your manual for the IP address belkin)
  • The drive apparently has three volumes on it: X: Y: and Z: (network drives)
  • I would backup the WD drive and reformat in NTFS format
  • I dont believe that these drives were meant to be networked. Therefore you get what you get....
Good Luck

WD My Book 1TB not recognised by belkin modem router USB storage

If I understand correctly ... You have not connected the drive to a computer.

If I am not mistaken the WD My Book has preinstalled backup software installed on it. It very well might also have a power down built as part of that programming. Try attaching it to a computer to verify this.

Assuming the backup software needs blank drive to work correctly I would first access the drive select all and delete anything you find (if you know how to unhide hidden files do that before you select and delete all) ... As a 2nd option I would just reformat the drive.

Hope that helps....

Try a replacement USB cable first, and test the MyBook on a different computer, to ensure the fault is on the external storage unit.

There are two possibilities:

The Mybook USB/ATA controller board is faulty.
In this case you can simply take apart the enclosure and mount the disk into a new enclosure. WD Mybooks are SATA, but double check the hard disk connector to ensure.

The hard disk inside is faulty.
In this case repair may be expensive. You need to locate a data recovery facility with a 'clean room' , the cost is usually more than $800.

If this happened after a power surge, then the problem is most likely a faulty controller board.

If instead you have dropped the hard disk it is possible an hard drive failure, in that case repair will be expensive.

A replacement enclosure will stfrom art about $20 on Ebay or Amazon, and must not necessarily be WD .
Check if your disk is Sata or PATA (IDE) before buying the enclosure.

WD My Book 1TB not recognised by belkin modem router USB storage

I have a work around for this.

In the detail of the Belkin manuals it says you can attach up to 4 USB storage devices via a USB HUB.

I had an old Hub so I Connected the HUB to the router and the Maxtor to the HUB --- It worked :-) It came up in a few seconds.

At first I powered the HUB but later took the power out of the hub and it still worked ;-} However when I used a different HUB it would not work without power to the HUB.

The HUB I use is an old Belkin 4 port Tetra Hub. The newer 7 port Belkin HUB (5 Rear 2 Top) only worked with the HUB powered.

Hope this helps untill Belkin Upgrade the Router sofrtare.

This is not as complicated as it may sound. You don't need the manager. Bring up the "run" window (XP - Start - Run / Vista Alt-R). Enter the following address [\\192.168.2.1] press enter. The drive will show up. Right click on it and select Map Network Drive. You can then uninstall the useless program from Belkin.
