Hi,

Connecting an external monitor will not mess up the laptop.

Most laptops have a standard 15 pin VGA external monitor connector. You need to connect the cable from the monitor to the laptop. Booth the Dell and power up the monitor. Soon as the laptop has gone through its routine of booting, press Fn + F8 or F4 (or whatever it is that needs to be pressed to activate the external monitor. It is normally an F key with the small monitor icon or the words CRT/LCD).

Pressing on the two (2) F keys would cycle on laptop display, laptop display + external, external only.

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards.

Thank you for using FixYa.

What is the best brand of monitor without lot of problem like black screen orange stand by light?

Any known brand, such as Samsung, Dell, Acer etc.

The main thing with monitors these days is to choose one that is LED back lit. LCD's use inverters that are very power hungry and they tend to burn out capacitors after a couple of years of use.

LED how ever are very low energy and don't need an inverter circuit to power the LED's, thus MUCH better life time.

Short in wiring

Look for bad solder joints, common problem due to poor design (the AC inlet is held in place by three solder joints, it should have been screw-mounted to the chassis)

Monitor won't come back from "sleep" setting.

Yes it can be, try it on other PC first to narrow down the problem.
Most problems in the Dell are failed transistors, poor solder works, see pictures here for guide: http://s807.photobucket.com/home/budm/allalbums
Post back what you find.

1905FP stuck in PowerSave mode. I'm using as a secondary monitor to my laptop, but won't activate when I send an application to that monitor. Everything worked properly until a few days ago, but I haven't...

Try to connect the monitor to a working PC.
If there is no problem, then you may try your laptop with a working monitor.
If you having same problem may be you should review the process for outputting display from your laptop.

Dell 22" monitor goes black

Hello,

Your monitor probably has bad capacitors now. Bring it to a local electronic repair shop and have the monitor tested. They can easily replace any bad capacitors.

I hope this helps. Have a nice day.

My son moved the monitor from one pc tp another and it worked great for a few days. Today he turns it on and the screen is black and blinks every couple of seconds. I have restarted, unplugged and checked...

Guess to narrow it down, can he put the monitor on another computer to see if it still works? Also putting different monitor on the current computer might give you a few more ideas. At least then you will know have a better idea of where the problem lies. Hard to diagnose this stuff unless you are the one sitting in front of it.
Hope this starts you in some direction.

My 15 inch Dell LCD flat screen monitor has 4 blue (cyan) verticle pixel bands about half an inch wide on my screen. The monitor is about 3 or 4 years old. Can you help?

Sorry, but it's kaput. Broken. LCDs were pretty bad a few years ago. A new one will cost a lot less than that one did, and will work a lot longer.

No power to monitor

4 years is a good life for a monitor, so i agree you can stick to Dell since its already proven itself... :) - As you mentioned, this monitor is not currently being sold from Dell, I would suggest an upgrade to a 19" - http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/productdetail.aspx?c=us&cs=19&l=en&sku=320-5629 or a 23" one http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/products/Displays/productdetail.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=dhs&cs=19&sku=320-7339 ... if i were you, i would choose a 23", but for a higher pricing :) (Answered this earlier for someone else too i suppose!)

Monitor won't turn on without help.

Do you have a second monitor or can you borrow one to check if the fault lies with the monitor or the PC?

If the monitor is at fault then there is not much you can do yourself. I suggest you contact Dell and get them to replace it under warranty. Most LCD monitors have a 3 year warrantly, at least they do in the UK.

cheers
