This generaly means the laser is having a tough time reading the disc. You can try cleaning the laser lens.

CAUTION!! The lens is delicate! I wipe DVD lenses with ONE drop of glasses cleaner on a Q-tip and, starting in the center, wipe in circles to the outside. Do not press down! Do not force the lens side to side. It will move while cleaning but don't put more pressure than needed to move the lens 3/4 way down!
Its a cheap test to se if there is a fingerprint on the lens. (You won't be able to see it - does not take much)
If this does not help, it means it needs a laser or worse. Probably just replace the player.

Portable dvd player when you put disc in machine it comes up with wrong disc display on screen is it the settings

It would more likely be the types of discs used. They are either of a region code not compatible with the player, contain foreign/unknown data, or they are unsupported formats. For example, if the player supports DVD-R playback, and you put a DVD-RW in, the player will generate 'wrong disc' message if the player cannot recognise the disc or the contents on it.

The disc formats/types that can be played should be outlined either on the unit itself or in the instruction manual (if you still have it). If the player shows that message even with genuine shop-bought DVDs then there is a defect within the unit, workshop attention may be required to fix it, but it could be costly.

'WRONG DISC' usually means the disc inserted is of a different region code to the player, or the wrong format (DVD-RW instead of DVD-R as exampled above). Try using different discs before going any further.

I was finalizing a disc, walked away for a few moments, came back and had a disc error. Took several minutes to be able to get the disc out. The recording contains a double OT win of a basketball game.....

First, try putting it in your computer's DVD drive and see if there is any data that you can see there. Often a computer DVD drive can see an unfinalized DVD where a regular DVD player cannot.

If it doesn't see anything you'll probably need a specialized tool like ISOBuster. This process can get very technical, though. For help, see here and here. It will take a lot of research and trial-and-error but it should be possible and if sounds like it may be worth it to you because of the importance of the subject matter.

My coby dvd player will not load dvds. After trying to load, I get a message that says "Wrong Disc". I have tried to put in other dvds, but get the same response. These dvds work in our other dvd...

its probably the laser is misaligned. somtimes you can maually reset it by takeing the disc out and sliding the "eye" toward the center. this will possibly break it, but a misaligned laser is not going to work so you;ve got nothing to lose. put in a disc you know is good, no scratches, and turn it on again.
good luck!

DVD doesn't play any disk anymore. Displays a message: this can't of disc can't be played ... I tried several different types of disks.

Same here! It would say something along the lines of "this type of disc cannot be played. please insert a different disc." it's the appropriate dvd region, i've tried all types of dvds, and it still won't work. the vhs and cd still works, it's just the dvd player that won't.

remove the cover of the unit and try to clean the lens with a soft clean dry cotton swab or if you have a compress air cleaner, just blow it. most of the time cleaning can solved this kind of problem. good luck!
