How to Load Vista or Win7 on a Toshiba Portege M400?

follow this steps
  1. You will find out that when booting your M400 from the Vista or Win 7 DVD, the setup program will not find your hard disk(s) The M400 has a SATA-RAID controller that doesn't have a "Vista Ready" driver! Use this driver
  2. Unzip the driver to a USB Memory stick and keep it ready for the disk management panel during setup
    • Use your Vista or Win7 DVD to boot
    • Stick the USB memory stick into any left hand USB port on your M400. you might have to try both ports until it is recognized by the setup
  3. Point to the memory stick when setup program ask you to load an external driver.
  4. Load the driver from USB Stick.
    • You should see the disk/partitions and should be ready to move forward in the installation process

Reinstall WinXP from cd onto totally erased partition.

what you need is a boot-able disk with windows xp on it ..and the way to install is simple ..and you do not need much ..
If you have a boot-able disk with windows xp ..is best ..what you need to do is to insert the disk ..and restart
If your boot order is with the cd/dvd drive first boot device ..it will ask to press any key for to start the installation ..if not ...it will just start ..but even if your disk drive is second..if you do not have any operation system ...it will try to boot from cd .
If it does not ..just press the F12 or F11 key ..(take a look cause it is specified on screen what key to press for boot menu ) ..and in the boot menu ..choose the disk drive ..and press enter ..Will ask for any key to continue ..and after that will load primary files..and will ask to agree with conditions ..Press enter to continue ..and will show the previous operation systems..Choose the C drive , and press enter to install ..Select to format the partition quick ..and will load files..
If you use a sata hard disk ..and it is not recognize in this stage ..you need to go to bios and disable the ahci function of the HDD ..or ..use a usb to load the raid drivers or ahci drivers..(you will be asked for 3rd party drivers at the beginning ..My advice is to disable teh ahci funtion and will always run proper ..specially if youdont know what you are doing exactly ..)
Another way to load is from a usb boot-able ..and teh procedure is teh same but choose usb as first boot on start ..
You can also go to bios before installation and under boot select teh cd/dvd to be your first boot device always ..This way if you have several trials on this installing ..you will just insert disk ..restart and press any key to confirm ..
In bios always press F10 to save changes ..
let me know if you have any questions..and if you do not have a boot-able disk ..I can help you to make one ..
Just contact me ..(best to buy the service from my page ..cause it takes a long time to do this and will probably need to connect remote to assure you will end up with a boot-able disk ..)
Its not that hard ..the idea is to download an image with the os ..and burn it using a image burner and end up with a boot-able disk .
You will also need all drivers for your model ..and this can be downloaded from manufacturer site ..or use the disk if you still have it .
If it is a generic computer .you need to identify the devices and download drivers for it ..

What's your probleIM trying to install windows after putting in a new hard drive and I keep getting error 10e7160017

If this is a blue screen error and it do not let you to install the operation system ..but only loads a few files ..it means that you have let the hard disk set by default ..in BIOS and it is on sata bus..and needs to install the ahci driver ...If you have its original driver disk ..and you have a bootable disk with the operation system ..try to see if it takes the driver from a memory stick ...Just run the installation from the boot-able disk ..and press f 6 when it asks for 3rd party driver ..if you installing windows XP ..or ..when you get to the first screen on windows 7 ..choose to load driver and browse for the ahci driver on the usb stick ..if it can be found..or load it into a partition instead..or a external floppy disk ..Or ..make a boot-able memory stick .and load windows from it ..and use the original disk with drivers to load the ahci driver ..
In case non of these will work ..just go to bios settings first ..and under the hard disk 0 ..select to disable the ahci mode...and select ide compatible ..or ide default ..or plain ide...anyway ..just not ahci ....and the hard disk will be seen and will let you to install the operation system ..
If you are trying to install from a recovery disk ..it may not work ..cause will not recognize the hard disk and may need to use files usually stored in the reserved partition of windows..so ..best to try install from a boot-able disk or boot-able usb device ..and after that load all drivers and programs ..including antivirus..
remember to get the lan driver in handy ..cause without it you will not be able to connect top the internet and finish the drivers and programs installing ..
let me know if you solved the problem and please rate my answer if it's helpful ..have a nice day !

I installed Ubuntu together with Windows XP but in the process I lost the ability to see (in none of the OS) the USB drives, how can I recover them?

In Ubuntu, go to Administrator/Hardware Driver Update. It will run an update to check drivers available against your hardware. BTW new version of Ubuntu available at the end of the week. Ubuntu Upgrade If that's unsuccessful, run a normal Ubunto Update to do a driver/support search. In XP, boot up,, insert your install disk and right-click on My Computer/Properties/Device Manager. There is an option at the top to "Scan for Hardware Changes". It should recognize the USB hardware. When it asks where to get the drivers, point it to your installation disk which should have all of your USB drivers on it.
Best of luck and enjoy Ubuntu!

Jvc gr-d395u video camcorder, move mini dv to computer

How it's supposed to work is to get a program that recognizes the camera, then the tape can be captures. Windows Movie Maker never supported it. In fact Microsoft doesn't even support it anymore. They have recommended using Pinncale Studio to work with DV cameras.

Once you install Studio, put the tape in, turn the camera on, Studio will load up.

Unable to find usb device in media studio

Does your device show up as a separate device in windows explorer? If so you may drag and drop files directly onto it.

Alternatively you can download alternative free media players like winamp and rhapsody which do the same job as media player.

If your device does not show up in windows explorer then you may have a usb problem on your Samsung media player. This is most likely to be a hardware fault which I don't know a free/cheap solution to.
