Question about Troy-Bilt Chipper Shredder
I had my carb rebuilt due to inability to start (no gas was making it into the carb). After installing the rebuilt carb, it started and ran great. I let it run for about 10 minutes so as to be sure the new gaskets got heated up etc.
After leaving it off for about 5 minutes, I started again but this time it took several pulls and white smoke was coming out of muffler. I think while it was off, the gas kept feeding. 1. is this normal? 2. is the float bowl's needle valve not doing its job? 3. Was the rebuild faulty? 3. I noticed there is a fuel shut off; it is correct procedure to shut the fuel off every time I turn it off so as to avoid this? 4. Should I complain to the service shop about the carb being done incorrectly? 5. Is this dangerous?
Perhaps your float has a pin hole in it. This would be a very easy thing to miss if rebuilding the carb. Easy way to check this would be to put the float in a bowl of gas. If the float, floats around like a donut would in a dish of milk, float is ok, but if it stands on end, float has a pin hole in it and needs to be replaced. I have seen this many times when the complaint has been that gas does not shut off. Might want to check it or tell your repairman to check it.

Yeah it sounds like the guy messed up up on the float level, an easy mistake, I would take it back to them. It isn't dangerous, maybe a few blisters, the fuel shut off is fine for long term, but not 5 mins. The white smoke is as you said, unburnt gas. I had a 57 ford tractor that I couldn't get the floats set on no matter what, when it was running, it was fine, but shut it off and you come back to an empty tank! I just put the shut off in the fuel line, problem solved. Hope this helps.
