Gas flow continuing when tiller is off

I had my carb rebuilt due to inability to start (no gas was making it into the carb). After installing the rebuilt carb, it started and ran great. I let it run for about 10 minutes so as to be sure the new gaskets got heated up etc.
After leaving it off for about 5 minutes, I started again but this time it took several pulls and white smoke was coming out of muffler. I think while it was off, the gas kept feeding. 1. is this normal? 2. is the float bowl's needle valve not doing its job? 3. Was the rebuild faulty? 3. I noticed there is a fuel shut off; it is correct procedure to shut the fuel off every time I turn it off so as to avoid this? 4. Should I complain to the service shop about the carb being done incorrectly? 5. Is this dangerous?

Perhaps your float has a pin hole in it. This would be a very easy thing to miss if rebuilding the carb. Easy way to check this would be to put the float in a bowl of gas. If the float, floats around like a donut would in a dish of milk, float is ok, but if it stands on end, float has a pin hole in it and needs to be replaced. I have seen this many times when the complaint has been that gas does not shut off. Might want to check it or tell your repairman to check it.

Yeah it sounds like the guy messed up up on the float level, an easy mistake, I would take it back to them. It isn't dangerous, maybe a few blisters, the fuel shut off is fine for long term, but not 5 mins. The white smoke is as you said, unburnt gas. I had a 57 ford tractor that I couldn't get the floats set on no matter what, when it was running, it was fine, but shut it off and you come back to an empty tank! I just put the shut off in the fuel line, problem solved. Hope this helps.

Tiller will not start, new plug, rebuilt carb, replaced upper oil seal, cleaned exhaust port.

You didn't say if there is a spark. Pull the plug out and hook the wire to it and ground the plug to engine. If there is spark then it is likely a fuel problem. Squirt a little starting fluid or gas in the sparkplug hole before putting the plug in and see if it fires. Pull the fuel line off the carb and check the flow.

Ran perfect last yr , gas was stale drained carb bowl and replaced gas it started up right away then cuople mins later it started blowing oil out of the oil over flow tube

Sounds like the Needle valve in the carburetor is stuck 'down' letting gas continually run from gas tank into carb. When the valve can't go up (Close) gas will run past the carburetor and into the crank case I bet your oil is full of gas. Check oil level see if it is overfull

Mantis tiller starts rt up, good idle no power, new fuel lines plug, filters, rebuilt carb, when trying to rev bubbles in gas tank?

Check that the fuel filter is sitting near the bottom of the tank, and not somehow being held near the top of the tank.

Honda GC 160 Engine, I had the carb replaced about 1 year ago, now its doing the same thing. At first it wouldnt start at all, I cleaned the carb, then it started would speed up and die. I then took the...

This really sounds like a carb problem, good to hear that you are taking the carb all the way off and soaking it, this is the best way to clean a carb. I don't think it would be the fuel pump, they either work or they don't. I would check the governer springs and linkages, if one of these is hung up on something it would cause the problems the you have identified. Also, when you re-install the carb make sure that you have all the gaskets installed, it is easy to forget one and that will cause the engine to **** air and make the whole engine run like ****.

Engine bogs down when speed is increased.

Ok I have r Royobi Tiller (30CC Gas) And last year it ran fine after rebuilding the Carb. This year it was "hard starts" Idles fine, (Tiny whisps of blue smoke in exhaust with correct ratio) Even seems to run better with the choke "on" but idle only. as soon as I touch the throttle...its bogs down in tune with how much gas I give it. Little throttle? Little bog down, Little more throttle? Almost stalls, a normal throttle rev? it stalls dead! Then starts right back up again in 1 pull and idles fine again!? WTF? So after cleaning a clean carb again, (twice) and seeing no change I thought I'd go look at the original diaphragm and compare it with the rebuild kit diaphragm (which is the one in the carb.) And guess what? The replacement has a larger rivet by a factor of "2". So basically it was flooding the carb, I bent the needle tang down, better but no cigar. But I could rev it half way now. A second disassemble to bend it yet a bit further and Vrooom vroom vrooom ****! So check your needle valve even though you think its 100%. (Especially if you rebuilt the carb with a kit!)

Gas leaks out of the carb throat/air intake opening, Carb has been rebuilt. I am thinking about the seat for the float needle valve

Yes, I believe you are correct in your assumption. The inlet needle and/or seat need to be replaced, the part that has the rubber/viton tip. Also, make sure the atmospheric vent is open, otherwise the bowl builds up pressure and fuel will flow out of the carb floor.

Tiller won't stay running sounds like restricted fuel flow to me, but explain "rebuilt the carb" so I can get an idea on what you did.

Though it sounds right off like you whooped it good and got the basics.

Right off, go back through the "system", check the fuel flow, check that spark on the plug. Eyeball for any loose wires (E.G., Kill Switch, etc.) that are grounding (you never know!)

Stick to KISS on this one, since it ran before the carb got bad and got rebuilt, it will be one of those things you replaced, rebuilt, or changed. Sometimes, it is the SMALLEST thing......

Honda 8HP GX240 willnot start after working fine.

Your carberator has crud, or rust, or glaze in it. The carberator will have to be removed, soaked in cleaner for three hours and then rebuilt using the proper carberator kit from any auto parts store. If you need to hire this done expect to pay about 35 dollars.
