The right click on my mouse stopped working. a search of the net shows I am not alone with this problem. Any idea how to fix this? I am running Vista 64 bit machine. When I right click the mouse all the icons on the desk top go away then they come back and everything is back to normal. But no drop down menu on the right click, nothing.

My right click mouse does not work anymore. When I right click on an icon on the desk top all the icons go away and then come back and its as if nothing happened. At the suggestion of your experts I ran a scan fromhttp://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php and also used trend micro's house call. I also use Winmaximizer. All three programs found nothing on the machine. Your expert also suggested useing "restore" the only problem with that is it only goes back two weeks and the problem is older then that. I am runing Vista 64 bit OS on a Gateway desk top computer.

I created a new user file, logged out of the one I was in and then started up with the new user file. When I tried to use the mouse right click as the new user, iexplorer would stop working and a message would come up asking me if I want to find solution or just restart the program. I tried both but still every time I used the right click whether on the desk top icons or the program icons in start the same thing would happen, i.e., iexplorer stalled. I then logged off as the new user and logged back in as the old user and nothing had changed with the right click, all the icons would go away and then come back but no drop down menu on the mouse right click.

I did the restore and it really screwed up my computer. It had NO effect on the problem; the right click still doesn't work.

  • n3epj Apr 25, 2010

The last "expert" wanted me to use Gateway's restore utility to correct the problem of the failure of my mouse right click function. The problem with doing that is its a totally distructive proceedure. It would be the last resort. The failure of the right click mouse function is to wide spread for someone not to have a solution short of wiping your hard drive clean and starting all over. That is a solution to ANY problem; is that the best FixYa has to offer?

Ok, You must establish First IF it is MOUSE or Software first try to startup in SAFE Mode, press F8 At boot time, select, Safe Mode, now see if you have the problem now, IF you do, then maybe your mouse is actually faulty, you need to change the mouse, IF PS/2 then try a USB Mouse, sometimes the PS/2 ports fault. In any event, if when you try it in Safe Mode and all is well, then you may have a driver problem. If everything was working a while ago, and then spontaneously went faulty, then I think, your problem maybe best fixed by doing a System Restore, To do this boot up like in safe Mode as before, now this time choose System Restore, and not safe mode desktop, now when at the next menu, like a calender, simply choose a time PRIOR, to when the problem FIRST started, now follow the instructions, and it will reboot, and soon you should be at your normal desktop with a normal mouse.

Hey,

To narrow down this problem, lets try this, click start, then control panel, then go to users or user accounts, create a new user account.

Then sign out / logout. Then login with the new account.

Does the mouse work normally on the new account?

in your start menu, start -> all programs-> Look for gateway restore utilities, do a full system restore, that will solve the problem.

  • Ekse Apr 25, 2010

Okay, you did the wrong restore, you did the system restore that comes with windows, you where supposed to use the GATEWAY's own restore utility, I assume its gateway thats what this is posted under.

Welcome to fixya..

To start with, this could be a virus issue.. To knock that out as a possibility please try a full scan of the free program below.

http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php

if it finds anything, have it remove the infected objects it finds ..

If your still having issues, then try a system restore via the

start menu, all programs, accessories, system tools, system restore.

Try to choose a restore point that was before you started having this issue..

If neither solution works, reply to me and let me know.

it also could be an error in the registry..

there is a key you can check, that if for some reason got changed would have turned off your right click menus..

here is a link that will help you check and see..

My finger mouse works just not the scroll feature

Check the scroll settings in Control Panel. Maybe it is disabled, or maybe something else.

Click the Start Orb (or Button in XP) and click Control Panel. There, search for Mouse Settings (or similar). In Vista, you can type what you want in the Search Box.

Message saying alps pointing devive has stopped working, can still move mouse pointer but cant use the scroll function

A possible fix for the Alps problem Your Alps pointer problem is probably driver related. To fix it:
1. Open Windows Explorer
2. Right click on Computer & choose properties
3. Open Device Manager (Admin password may be required)
4. Under Mice & other pointing devices, right click Alps pointing-device & choose Update driver software
5. Choose Search automatically & it will download and install the latest signed driver from the windows repositories & hopefully that will fix that problem.

Mouse not working

Go do device manager, under my computer properties. right click on the mouse have the hardware disk inserted and Click yes to allow it to search for new hardware. then in the next window click advance box the second of the two, now in the third window that shows up click the box that allows you to locate the file instead of having the computer find the correct one. there should be about 4 different drivers that show up after the computer searches the disk. Click the one that is called MID-Mouse. PM me for more help this is just a quick help maybe are to follow for some.
