Question about Microsoft Xbox 360 Controller
Due to the massive strain which can be put on the cable connecting the controller to the X-Box due to getting carried away with getting the opposition with a head shot. I'd say the cable has fractured internally either where it enters the handpiece or where it enters the X-Box USB port. From experience, probably the former.
Try swapping the handpieces and see if the problem changes with the swap. At the moment your Channel 2 handpiece is OK so put it into socket one and you should find channel one is OK but Channel two isn't assigned
Don't be surprised if both come up as OK because if the fracture is in the right place it can remak the contact and work. Although it will break down again when you move it. It's a common problem I've repaired my Grandson's controllers a few times. Luckily I have a Playstation with no cables so I don't suffer from broken controllers. Wink Wink :-)
I'm not sure if you can buy just the cables, I've never seen any for sale and buying used ones can be a hassle so I'd recommend a new controller. Unless you or a friend is willing to cut the cable just about 6 inches from the controller and rewire it but if your luck is like mine you'll find the fault is at the USB end. It's worth a try, you've got a 50% chance of getting it right.
If you do try it yourself don't forget to make a drawing of where the wires run to and what colours they are so you don't get them mixed up otherwise a move forward could blow your mates head off. In the virtual world of course.
If you are a gambler and find a controller with broken joysticks a complete change of cable may do the job and work out a lot cheaper. Just be carefull and remember how the controller came apart and just reverse that procedure to reassemble it. One warning though Don't try repairing it whilst it's plugged in Oh! and don't overtighten the screws when putting it back together. They are screwing into plastic and it's easy to strip the thread or snap it.
Meanwhile it's one man machine until you fix it. By the way, try not to save a few dollars wif you replace it. The cheap ones are really rubbish.

The Xbox 360 utilizes two
types of controllers: wired and wireless. Like most operations on a
video game console, configuring a controller requires little effort. You
can either plug the controller into a port on the Xbox 360, or sync a
wireless controller using the console's built-in controls.
